Chapter 24 Keeping the Peace

Joyce could hear the strain in Jean's voice when she answered her. She secretly sighed in relief. "Thank you, Jean," she said.

Jean fell silent and didn't reply. The two didn't speak after that. In the end, Joyce was the one to end the call. It left Jean staring at her phone with mixed feelings.

She lay on the bed, and the little bit of drowsiness she felt completely vanished after the call. Nausea hit her again and again, making her fall in and out of sleep.

Midnight.

Jean thought she could feel someone caressing her forehead. She opened her eyes slowly, but everything was pitch black before her. She felt like she was in a dream. The man was gentle with her when he stroked her head, afraid of waking her up.

Jean felt heat rush up her cheeks. There was someone in front of her. Instinctively, she said, "I need some water." The hand on her face froze momentarily before pulling away.
