Patrick excused himself and got up abruptly from his seat,the screeching of the chair against the white porceline tiles made his teeth hurt and his ears ache. Steading himself on his wifes arm they both ascended the staircase and disappeared down the passage.

John sighed.''At last this false shaming drama has ended'', he thought, sliding his chair back gently.
