Chapter Five~The Truth?

Gunshots.

The sounds were loud and did not stop.

Lin should have been feeling fear but she was not. Maybe it was the adrenaline. Or maybe it was the fact that she was just sick and tired of everything especially after she had had a crappy day.

When she was satisfied with where she was, she finally brought the car to a stop. It was parked right in front of the mansion.

“Step out of the car with your hands in the air!” A strong voice commanded.

Lin breathed deeply for a few seconds before opening the door of the vehicle and doing what was asked of her. The scene that she saw was fearstrucking.

It was the first time in her life to have so many guns pointed at her at the same time. Guard dogs were ready to be released only at the will of their master. And there was a sound, like an alarm that echoed in the air.

“Hands in the air!!” Another voice thundered, causing Lin’s heart to skip a beat.

She did what was asked of her. “I’m a Boyce!” She tried to explain but no one wanted to listen to her.

“Knees to the ground!”

Lin’s breath was shaky as she knelt on the hard ground and kept her hands raised in the air. “I’m a Boyce,” She cried under her breath as her eyes got teary.

“Hold it!” A female’s voice grabbed everyone’s attention.

Lin’s eyes flew in the direction of the voice and she saw that it was a lady with bright blonde hair.

The lady looked familiar but as hard as she was trying to rack her brain to figure out who she was, Lin just could not.

“Ma’am, it’s not safe. You need to step back,” One of the guards advised the lady.

She only chuckled in return. “I’m married to one of the strongest werewolves in this town. Trust me, I have nothing to worry about.” She walked past the guards and approached the unknown girl who had her hands up in surrender.

“And shut down that damn alarm!” The lady exclaimed before finally reaching the girl. Her intrigue was piqued. “Dear…” She said the word as she stared into the eyes of the girl. “Who are you? And why do you want to get yourself killed?”

Lin sniffled and then glanced at the guards before putting her hands down. She proceeded to stand to her feet. “I’m Lin Boyce, the daughter of the Alpha and Luna of the pack.”

The lady squinted her eyes as she stared at Lin. “Mmm, you really believe that, don’t you?”

Lin scoffed under her breath. She was frustrated. She had already had a long day, and now this. “I don’t believe it, I know it.” Her voice was firm.

The lady smiled warmly and nodded slowly. “Lin Boyce, you said?”

“Yes. Now, where are my parents?”

“I’m Sarah, I’m the temporary Luna of the pack.” The lady introduced herself as she extended her hand for a handshake to Lin.

Lin was tentative but she returned the handshake. “Temporary Luna?”

“Yes, dear. You must be the daughter that ran away years ago,” Sarah said as she gestured for the guards to return to their posts.

“Mm-hmm.”

“Walk with me.” Sarah flashed a comforting smile at Lin and led her into the huge and fancy mansion. “Your parents…” Her voice faltered a bit. “We lost your parents a week ago to a gas leak.”

“A gas leak?” Lin was taken aback. “How the hell does that happen?” She scoffed. “Other Alphas and Lunas die when they are a ripe age or from battle. But a gas leak?”

“It’s actually called carbon monoxide poisoning. It killed them in their sleep if that helps.” Sarah showed a small nervous smile as she sat down on the couch.

As for Lin, she did not want to sit. She wanted answers! “I mean, they lived in a royal mansion, for crying out loud! A f*cking gas leak?!” Tears filled her eyes as she raised her voice.

She didn’t mean to be loud though, it just seemed to be happening.

“Lin, dear, why don’t you sit down for a second?” Sarah tried to help, gesturing to the space next to her.

Hot tears freely flowed from Lin’s eyes and her breath shook a bit before a small sob escaped her lips. “I–I didn’t even get to say goodbye,” She managed to say. “I left them. I left them for so long and didn’t even get to say goodbye to them.”

“Oh, dear. It’s not your fault.” Sarah stood to her feet and approached the girl.

As soon as she tried to touch Lin, she recoiled and said in a sad yet firm voice, “Do not touch me.”

“I’m just trying to help.”

“Well, no one f*cking asked you,” Lin spat the words before storming out of the living room. She did not know where she was heading but she just wanted to be out of there.

In a few minutes, she realized that she was in a totally different part of the mansion. She did not attempt to wipe the tears that had rolled down her soft skin.

Lin could not believe how much different everything was, the mansion looked so much different from how she remembered it. But it was years ago, so she kind of understood.

“Hey there,” A voice floated in the air, startling her.

She had her entire attention on the portrait of her parents that was on the wall and she did not notice the very attractive guy that had walked up to her.

She sniffled and quickly wiped her face. She cleared her throat and forced a chuckle. “Uh, hi. I’m sorry, I was just…” She did not know what else to say.

“It’s okay, you don’t have to say anything,” The guy replied in a comforting way. “You’re Lin Boyce, right?” His voice was smooth.

“Yeah, and you are?” Lin tried to have a conversation even though her heart was broken so badly.

Just as the guy was about to reply, her phone made a chime, causing her heart to skip a beat.

Was it who she thought it was?

When she took her phone out and glanced at the screen, of course, she was right. It was a text from No User.
