XXXIII. Their Attention
Essi has liked the reflections of Oneil and herself on the surface of the dark waters. But she never thought that there is more joy in seeing her image in the eyes of Oneil, looking with care at her. His hands are in front of Essi, waiting for her to hold. It is time now to leave the boat that separated them for a while from the worries of life. Essi sets her feet again on the soil of the riverside. The sense of security accompanies her at Oneil’s reminder for them to get Essi home.
While on their way, they saw the curfew station staying active with an emergency light at the corner of the street. Paco’s mother, Minerva, is staying at the station with her barangay volunteer vest. The Gautarza Company Build has become the safe haven of Essi and Oneil, although this place was never new to them. It’s like a modern refuge place for perturbed ties. Without intending anything, their lunch feels more meaningful than the last time they had it. Victor arrives at Essi’s office, all glad that the food delivery has come for them. There is Jillian as well that carries more food packages, and Gwyneth to add the lunch enforcement. Essi left her station right away, revealing how hungry she already is. Oneil has already entered the scene and was waiting for Essi to take her seat first. The five started their delightful meal inside the office. It feels at home and without trouble. I can make the boss directly hire me,” she said, and it made her fellow applicants grimace at her. The grimace turns to shock at the sight of the boss walking nearby. She has her staff with her and she marches with morning command. The applicants stood up to greet Essi. But Marika skipped a beat and played the courtesy song to her own rhythm. Essi has always liked making an entry for her journal. But there are times she would like to skip making one even though her day is filled with many events. On this night, her fingers flipped through many pages. Most of her entries are about her meeting with Oneil, including her attempts to chase him. She has a lot of photos about his situation as well as some of her sentiments. Perhaps, Victor is right. She was somehow not believing in Oneil how he can handle Marika’s antics. She should have trusted him more. She might have clarified that she didn’t mean to let Marika get hired as a test of Oneil’s loyalty. But she knew that something from that afternoon had made the ties of the two blurry and weak. Essi should have fled when she noticed Marika was already walking away from Oneil. But she stayed there, instinct giving hints that she must wait for Oneil to realize that she was listening to them. Essi steps back from Oneil. But the man moves closer to her with his sullen face. His eyes are staring at her intently, without a blink and buying no excuse. Is he furious at her? Essi lifted her head without any attempt to waver. If she would show any hint of being intimidated, Oneil might accuse her of being guilty. She stood proudly while her eyes were retaliating to glare at Oneil. Essi didn’t say a word. She was waiting for him to ask again. “I don’t think it will be best for us to talk here,” Oneil suddenly said and left Essi standing there awestruck. Oneil opened the door. She intended to remain in her office right at noon, without lunch, to see if Oneil will check on her situation and will surprise her with lunch packs. But nothing happened. She walks back and forth across her office, peeking at the door like a monkey, thinking that she’s probably making her life a comedy. She keeps on hoping that maybe Oneil will pass by and check the cleanliness of her office or at least wonder if Essi already has lunch yet. But she is still in solitary and her stomach already churns in pain.
