CHAPTER 35

SARAH

"Come on, Sarah!"

Emma swiftly plopped herself down on the couch, shaking her legs like a child fueled with an incredulous secret waiting to be shared. She beamed at me, unable to contain her excitement for a moment longer.

"You won't believe it! Mom said I could come visit you for the whole weekend! Just me, without anybody else!" Emma's words bounced around the room.

Emma looked around the house, admiring and touching everything that her hands could lay on. She touched a flower vase by the side, and there it went, crashing on the floor.

"Oops!" Emma gasped, her eyes wide with surprise, as she stared at the shattered pieces of the flower vase lying on the floor.

"Why would my mother say that? I'm a married woman, for goodness sake!!" I yelled.

Emma's eyes widened, and she staggered slightly, the words crashing into her like a tidal wave.

"M-married?" Emma stammered, a mix of surprise and confusion etching across her face. "Wow, Sarah, congratulations! I
