Hurried

Halfway to the trees, Reese paused and cocked his head. He listened intently, frowned. "I do not hear anything."

"Yes, there is ... come here." I waved him over and ran a few more steps towards the whimper.

Reese followed me without comment. His ears pricked up, paying attention to every little noise.

We ran along the top of the toboggan run, getting closer and closer to the grove on the other side. It wasn't until we were halfway inside that Reese finally seemed to notice it. "Did you hear that?" He looked around, back to the place where we had stood before. It was nearly twenty yards away.

"I've always had pretty good ears."

He gave me an indefinable look before he went further into the little wood, always after the quiet whimper.
