Something in the Darkness (2)
The carriage is passing by the desolate forest. Everywhere she looks, there is nothing but darkness. It is as if she has gone blind and the world has suddenly become cold. Roseanne shivers and wraps her coat tighter around her body.
Sloria is a cold place but this forest is different. There are faint whispers echoing in her ears but she is not sure what those are. Animals? Or spirits? Roseanne does not believe in spirits but there are rumors of hauntings in the forest. Moreover, if the Undead can return, then why should she rule out ghosts?

The Undead is unlike anything Roseanne has ever seen. Its skin is decaying, the skull nearly visible. The eye sockets are empty but the Undead can somehow see her or rather, sense her. Its bony nose is twitching as it smells her and its hollow sockets are staring in her direction.It raises a finger at her.“You…” The Undead utters. “Witch…witch…found…”Roseanne tries not to be scared but it is hard. The creature is intelligent and smart. For something like that to take down many vampire guards is unthinkable. Even if the vampires have lost the Great War, they are still a formidable force and extremely skilled in fighting. Undead are not that intelligent to use a bow and arrow. They live in a mindless, zombie-like state where they only know how to harm humans but are easily hunted down by other predators. Even a skilled human hunter can take them out.

Roseanne follows Dmitri into the cell. A foul stench of rotten meat and fungi hot her nostrils, making her nearly throw up.“What is this smell?” She asks in disgust.“This is the true stench of an Undead,” Dmitri says in a calm tone. Inside the cell is another corridor. At the end of the corridor is a smaller cell where the Undead has been kept under heavy security and even though the door is closed, the stench is still unbearable. With every step, it only strengthens making Roseanne sick to the stomach.Dmitri does not seem to be affected even though the stench is more potent to him than it is to Roseanne. She is slightly awed by his ability to tolerate the smell and stays close to him. He holds her palm, as if to assure her that she is safe with him.
