Now, Oliver was disadvantaged. He would not want the miscreants to harm the city children, who he presumed could not defend themselves. As for him, he was used to village life.

“What is the meaning of this, Peter? How did I betray you?” The vigilant Oliver asked.

“What is his offense,” the maid blurted.

“Stay out of this,” Peter warned the maid, and said despicable things about Oliver, and tried to goad him into a fight.

“Let's go,” Oliver signaled to the children.

“Why? We are not through with our fruit hunting,” Joe pointed out, and continued eating the unwashed fruits. Now, Oliver was scared. Not of Peter, but of the safety of the youngsters in his care.
