CHAPTER 39

Ashford closed the door as soon as Adrian and Phoebe stepped inside. He held a box in his hand—the same box Phoebe had dropped earlier. Adrian helped Phoebe to a chair and tried to comfort her; she was breathing heavily, and tears threatened to fall. Her hands were trembling more than he had expected. His sister was terrified.

Luna bent over Phoebe and held her hand. "Don’t worry, Phoebe. Nothing will happen to you."

Phoebe slowly nodded in approval of what Luna had said, then she glanced around.

"I lost the gift I brought for you; I can’t believe I lost it after spending hours on it. I'm so sorry, Luna."

Ashford, who was standing nearby, handed the box to her. Phoebe flashed him a smile. Although she was trying to hide her fear behind that smile, he could see it cracking. She was just trying to appear strong. Ashford's brows furrowed; that man had done a lot lately.
