Tom had been planning to propose to Hazel for weeks, but he couldn't find the right moment. He was worried that if he waited too long, she might change her mind and he didn't even know how she would react if he proposed to her. So, he decided to take her to the beach, where they could have some fun and then he could pop the question. This was the only chance he got to take Hazel totally away from Gerald. Tom had the feelings that things would go well because Hazel wouldn't want to reject his proposal after everything they had done together and what they had shared together in the past after her break up with Gerald.
