Heart To Heart

"Done," Chang returned the phone to Phoebe. Her eyes lit up, and she exclaimed, "Woo, that easy!" He smiled, appreciating her innocence, and then looked away, noticing how dark it was outside.

"Phoebe, it's pretty late for you to be out here alone," he said, concern etching his features.

Phoebe felt the weight of his words. She forced a smile, even though her heart stung.

She couldn't take back her earlier declaration of not loving the man in front of her. Once again, she realized she'd made a wrong decision.

She cared about him deeply. After a near-death experience, her emotions had intensified. She stepped closer and hugged him. "Thanks for caring about me, but you don't need to worry. I can take a taxi and head back."

He pulled her back gently, patting her head. The unexpected touch startled Phoebe. "You don't have to tell me that," he said softly. "I already know how capable you are."
