chapter 52 A chance

Maxwell pulled away from the hug, looking at Mellisa with a questioning gaze. "You mean that you want to give me a chance to be your husband?" he asked, unable to believe his eyes and ears. The last time he had checked, Mellisa had wanted nothing to do with him. What had changed her mind so quickly? He could only wonder.

Mellisa felt a thickness in her throat, signalling the onset of tears. "I've been lonely my whole life," she said, her voice trembling. "I know Michelle has been by my side, but it couldn't fill the void in my life. I never experienced the love of my mother or my father. I thought marriage would end the loneliness, but it only made it worse. I just want to experience being loved and wanted by someone, to let go of the past and move on with my life, to be happy.
