Dante

Caine returned at noon. He didn’t look like he drank everyone under the table but he had. He also didn’t look happy.

He slammed his computer bag onto the chair across from the couch.

“Not a fucking scrap. No Chaney Smith, no Chaney. No nothing. She’s a ghost.”

“How could she be a ghost? She’s like seventeen or eighteen. She has a past.”

Caine was furious and I was more so.

The knock at the door had me throwing it open again and hoping it was the secretive freak without a past on the other side.

Fuck. My. Life.

It was Xavier.

He walked inside and I closed the door behind him. I was sure this wasn’t a visit I needed anyone else to hear. He casually sat on the couch and there was nothing casual about the man but he pulled it off.

Caine’s eyes were larger than I’d ever seen.

“Have a seat, Mr. Laterza.”

The voice held no room for argument. I was not accustomed to anyone ordering me around.
