Chapter 76

This night, it was particularly darker than she remembered. The street lamps were luminous, but they did nothing to brighten what she saw of the night.

Ethan was a slow, careful driver, unlike Liam, or so he made her believe. They had been on the road for close to twenty minutes, and she was getting worried if he really knew where the hospital was. Was he trying to buy time, she couldn't help but wonder.

A gentle country music was playing out of the stereo, and Ethan's eyes, when he was not glancing over at her, seemed distant. As though he was daydreaming about something.

Their conversation had been clipped, with nothing tangible communicated.

"Are you still thinking about it?" Ethan asked now, splitting through her thoughts.

She glanced at him, and shrugged her shoulders, as though saying there was nothing else to do. "I just hope he's fine."

"They say it's bad," he said.

"Who said?"
