Chapter twenty-one

I made a stupid mistake of trying to look up while trying to get out of the limo. I tripped air and my own wedding dress, stumbled, and plunged straight to the ground. I braced myself for the impact but something incredible happened.
It never came.
It took a few moments for it to dawn on me that two bony arms had wrapped around me to avoid me from kissing the ground. I fluttered my eyelids closed and forced out a breath.
"I'm sorry, ma'am," Jonas' voice resounded in my ears as the two skinny arms pulled me up to standing position. His ears were tinged with a little hint of pink and he avoided my eyes.
I stared at him weirdly, wondering how those skinny arms could pull me up so easily. I pulled my undone hair away from my eyes with another breath escaping my mouth. "Thank you," I told him sincerely with a smile.
He smiled back and stooped low to pick

The next morning, I had a vague memory of what had transpired the previous night.And– I ended up sleeping in living room.Light. Bright... Warm... Piercing... Light. It was everywhere. Invading my deep, dreamless sleep like a starving mosquito. I tried to hide and curl into a ball but the glare was too strong."Please," I grunted, sounding something like a cross between a choking cavewoman from the ancient world and a bleeding pig. "Thank you," I muttered to the middle-aged man behind the steering wheel of a yellow cab as I handed him a crumpled twenty-dollar bill. "Yeah sure," he grunted, driving off and leaving me alone in front of a tall building.The building was no more than a little skyscraper. The size was pretty normal for an average skyscraper building despite the fact that TE was a lot bigger and embellished than it. I tried to ignore that. The human brain is amazing. It's funny how it works all day every day for twenty-four hours but stops only when we're taking a test, speaking to someone attractive, or receiving bad news. I swear my brain stopped processing thoughts for the next few minutes after the interview guy dropped the bombshell. Time whizzed past my head as the other lady, Megan, ushered me out of the conference room with a sour look on her face. I couldn't blame her, honestly. That was the effect Mr. Trevelyan had on people. The poor woman hadn't even met him yet and he was already ruining her mood. A member of the female species stared back at me in the vanity mirror. I recognized her. She was me and she had the most deadpan expression I had ever seen on her face. At that moment, my emotions were bipolar. I didn't know whether to be sad, angry, or anxious.
