Once, when Alice was a child, her little safe haven amid her mother's screams and punishments was the huge office in the west wing of the Dawsey mansion, which always smelled of lavender disinfectant and tobacco. Now, the only place she knew she would find any comfort was a sterile, white hospital room, so absurdly equipped that it could even be called a miniature house.
However, one thing between the two places, between the past and the future, had not changed.
The man stretched out on the bed in front of her at that moment.
“Alice.” Lucas Dawsey smiled broadly as soon as he saw her, his voice damaged from years of smoking and the oxygen tube connected to his nose “There you are, my dear.”
“It’s so good to see you, Grandpa.” she
“Answer, Dawsey!” Massimo growled, his chair sliding a little on the perfectly polished floor as he moved even closer to her “I gave clear orders for you to stay in that fucking house and there you are, disobeying me again! Do you think I’m some kind of clown?!”“No, I think you used to be a reasonable man, but you clearly aren’t anymore.” Alice replied “If you accepted my mother's proposal to get a wife out of convenience so you could keep her locked up, then maybe you should have bought a bird or something. I am not your property so you can dictate where I go and where I don’t go.”“Do you really want to challenge me?” His teeth gritted as those green eyes burned into hers “You agreed to this marriage because of my money, so don't act like you weren't bought! I gave you my las
“Try to find me, mommy!” At the sound of Millie’s excited scream, Alice moved away from the tree she was leaning against and hiding her eyes with her hands “You’ll never make it.”“We'll see about that…” Alice laughed, pretending that she hadn't already noticed Millie's feet appearing under one of the bushes in the garden at the entrance of the Bianchi mansion “Oh, God… Where is my baby...?”While Millie was clearly trying to hide her own laughter nearby, Alice began to walk around the huge garden, pretending she was looking behind every tree, umbrella table and flower bed scattered around. She couldn't even remember the last time her daughter had been able to play hide and seek as freely as she did that day. Because of the tiny room next to
“Are they going to be mean to you?” Millicent hugged her neck even more firmly, scared.“Is that what you made Millie think about us?” Amber hid her face in her hands, sobbing as if she had just been called a murderer or something similar “I love my niece so much... I've missed her so much at the mansion... I thought we could work this all out when you calm down, but you're still trying to punish us by taking Millicent totally away...”“Don't cry, sweetie…” Casey hugged his new girlfriend even closer, even though his eyes were on Alice “Please, Alice, fix this. You know we never intended to hurt you or take you out of our lives! Explain to Millie that we are not the villains, so that she doesn't think so badly of her own aunt..."“Don’t you dare involve my daughter in this!” Alice cut him off, irate “It doesn't matter what she thinks about you two, because neither you nor Amber
“Massimo.” Amber was the first to react, swallowing hard as if she had seen a ghost, while clinging to Casey just as she would a human shield.“What the fuck are you two doing on my property?!” he growled, his chair cutting through the grass of the garden as he approached where Alice stood, still shocked by what had happened “I did not give permission for my wife to have any visitors. Specially you!" His eyes became even colder as he looked in Amber's direction.“You... You just attacked me, Mr. Bianchi!” Casey stuttered, pointing to his own arm “Do you have any idea I could sue you for that?”“Really?” Massimo laughed, threateningly “So, why don't you go ahead and do it? I'm sure one of my cameras must have caught you harassing a married woman!
Massimo still remembered the first time he had laid eyes on Alice Dawsey, even though it was more than six years ago.Of course, with his father and her grandfather being such close friends, that was not the occasion on which they had met. A couple of times, they had ended up bumping into each other during Lucas Dawsey's visits to Italy or during the parties that Tommaso promoted for his partners in the USA. However, that party at the Peterson house was the first time he actually looked at her, without the two of them being two children acting strangely. She had just turned 18 and, hell, he even felt guilty about being 4 years older, but he still couldn't take his eyes off her the entire night. Amber Dawsey was certainly in the most expensive dress and was much louder, but he wasn't one of the dozens of men she managed to catch the eye of during the party. Even
“Are the cookies ready, mommy?!” a tiny body hugged Alice’s leg as she finished placing the latest batch of cookies on the Bianchis’ kitchen counter.“Your favorites are almost ready, darling.” She took off the oven glove to stroke Millie’s hair for a moment “They just need to cool down.”“Did you do the others I asked for?” Her daughter asked, with an expectation that left Alice confused.“The ones with caramel and chocolate drops? Yes, I did. They're over there." She pointed toward the end of the kitchen counter, though her eyes were on Millie's delighted expression “Are you sure you want to eat them? I thought you didn't like caramel that much...”“Uh... Yes, I'll eat.” Mil
“What letter is that?” Alice asked, holding up one of Millie's old colorful cards, which had actually belonged to herself in her childhood."B!" Millie raised her finger excitedly.“And what word starts with B?”“Bee!” Millie looked for the bee figure among the various illustrations that were spread across the table, until she managed to help Alice put the two together.“You are so smart!” Alice pulled her close, hugging her until Millie was laughing, trying to pull away “So, shall we draw the bee and try to write its name, like we did with the apple?” She sat her baby in her lap, reaching for the blank sheets of paper and the colored pencils that were also on the table “You're getting so good at this...&r
“Massimo!” Thea gasped, like a mother who had just seen her son get into an accident, but she didn't even have time to take more than a few steps into the room before a shout from Massimo stopped her.“Don’t come near me!” he growled, but even though he was trying to hide his face as he was struggling to stand up using only his arms, Alice could see the pain and humiliation in his expression “Neither of you! If you don’t want to be thrown out of this mansion right now, then you better stay where you are!” His voice sounded harsher and more menacing than usual, his limp legs making harrowing sounds over the broken glass, dragging the shards across the carpet and certainly forming some cuts in the fabric of his sweatshirt and on his skin.“Massimo, please...” Josiah held his crying wife by the shoulders,
