My mouth goes dry as I stand there, unsure of what to say. I can't tell what he thinks because I'm too worried about the fact that I just got caught. This wasn’t part of the plan. I brush away the tears from my eyes, my face no doubt red and blotchy from them. I think about lying, but as I stand here in the middle of the night with my bag slung over my shoulder, I can’t think of another excuse as to why I am out here. His eyes narrow as he looks me over, his keen gaze making me feel like he can read my thoughts. The only thing that still shocks me is that he hasn’t raised the alarm. No other guards are coming here to escort me back, and for some reason, that feels worse.
