SCARLETT

There was no one behind—

My thoughts all died when loud howls echoed behind me. My body begged to paralyze in fear of what was coming, but I kept running just like Dixon. I couldn’t let him down, couldn’t make him think I was an idiot who froze at the hint of threat.

“ Don’t look back, Luna. Keep moving forward. ” Dixon shouted at me when I slowed a fraction.

Energy returned to my body. I ran faster than before, matching his speed and stamina. But who was I kidding?

The howls were growing near. And from the sounds of it, the number of wolves couldn’t be less than two dozen or something.

This was a death situation. Dixon and I were against at least 20 wolves.

We were going to die. It would be all my fault.

My eyes stung and so did my nose as we kept running, and dodging branches here and there.

“ They won’t catch up to you. ” Dixon’s hand loosened around my wrist somewhere along the way.

I didn’t stop. But he slowed down.

I ran forward. He released my hand.
