Chapter 42

SCARLETT

I was walking over black water. It was only deep enough to come up to my ankles. But, it was cold—stinging cold.

I didn’t know how or when I got here but I had been walking for a long time without stopping. There was light waiting for me at the end in the form of a silver wolf with green eyes peering back at me.

Desperate to reach her, I broke into a sprint. I ran, neared her, and found her getting far from me again.

It was like I knew this she-wolf, and she knew me too but we couldn’t reach each other. She was not even trying, but the sadness in her eyes told me she wanted to end this distance as much as I did.

A piece of my soul was missing without her. It was excruciating. The never-ending space between us was beginning to enrage me.

It was not common. It was not supposed. And the harsh cold water encircling my feet told me the same thing.

She was caged in a dark place. I was stuck here too now.

I had to get out and break her out with me.

Keeping it in my mind, I ran harde
