Chapter Forty-Four

Mazelina

It feels like I’ve been in this pretty cell for months and not days. Time seems to move quickly and slow at the same time.

Samara has been trying to think of all kinds of strategies to convince Fenrir, but nothing seems to work. He shrugs and tells us he will continue with the extraction. Whatever that means.

I’m sure Lydia has an ulterior motive. Every time she visits, she has this look, one that makes me think she doesn’t want us to survive at all. It amazes me that she and Sally are sisters; they’re so different.

Watching the birds dance in the sky is the only solace I find in this place. I let Sam come up with different ideas while I watch the birds. I haven’t given up, not yet. I just haven’t found the one thing that will stop Fenrir from going through with it.

The cell door opens slowly; it must be time to eat. I move to the small table where I have my meals. I’m surprised to see Fenrir himself holding the tray.

“Good Evening, Mazelina.” He smiles and moves into the roo
