Chapter 111: Through the Vent

I twisted the key on the padlock, and nothing sounded more satisfying than to hear it click open. Nancy was right close behind me, holding the hem of my blouse like a child clinging to her mother.

Aside from the dagger, I also stole two guns from the guard and the rifle. I have no idea how to use it, but I know I’ll figure it out when it comes to life-and-death situations.

I poked my head out, checking the perimeter first to ensure no one was roving the hallway leading to our cell. Only then, when the coast was clear, I tugged Nancy as we slipped out.

Right down the corridor was another door, and on the opposite side was a dead end. Unfortuitously, our cell was located on the opposite end of the passage from the entrance, and it was blocked with solid unpainted concrete walls. There were others too, but they were all empty. The only exit was the door at the end of the hallway, an no other way around.

“What if there were more guards posted outside?” Nancy mumbled apprehensively,
