When we reached the town, I parked along the main strip of stores. “There is a clothing shop right over there,” I said to Rainey, pointing across the street. “And a convenience store is around the corner. Be sure to ask anyone for help if you need it. Everyone is really friendly around here.” Having Rainey talk to the locals would help her alibi as much as mine.

“Where are you meeting the client?”

“We’re going to have coffee around the corner. I’ll call you when we’re finished and then we can head back and have dinner at the lodge tonight.”

She started across the street.

“Wait,” I said, jogging over to her. “Here.” I handed her my credit card. A money trail was key in keeping a good alibi. If anyone suspected my involvement, they would see that I was more than halfway across the country when Sal was murdered. Normally, I would have paid cash but that was harder to trail for any law enforcement.

“Are you sure?” she asked.

I squeezed her hand. “Don’t ask me that again.”
