Caleb didn’t say anything for a long time. I was beginning to think he wasn’t going to say anything at all. Minutes began to tick by, which made me feel a little awkward.

We sat there looking at each other, neither of saying a word. I was beginning to think that I needed to say something else to assure him. When he pulled back from my touch and moved off the bed, I thought maybe I had said something to upset him.

It was hard to tell from the way he was keeping silent. Facial expressions, I felt, were important for others, in the sense it allowed someone to gauge one’s reaction. If someone was feeling a certain way, yet they hid it, it was hard to know how to approach something.

It was one thing for me to handle my own problems, it was another matter entirely when I had to be there to help other’s problems. Not that I couldn’t handle it, the difference was that when they didn’t show their emotions or when they hid
