'Beep, beep," the medical instrument connected to Kirsten’s body, continuously sounded, greeted Kirsten as she woke from coma.
"She's awake, Dr. Townsend," Kirsten heard a woman speak, her voice tinged with excitement.
"Water," Kirsten was surprised how hoarse her voice sounded to her ears.
The nurse quickly took water and put a straw in the cup of water, holding it before Kirsten's mouth.
Feeling so thirsty, Kirsten completely emptied the cup.
"You have been in a coma for three days," the doctor informed her sensing that she had no idea why she was in the hospital.
Memories came flooding in, she remembered she was enticed by the sea and the voice…
Whose voice was it? Who saved her?
"Who took me here?" Before she could stop herself from asking, the words already came out of her mouth.
"Mr. Roosevelt, brought you here. He was here a while ago and left for a business meeting," the nurse answered her question.
The doctor did several tests on her before she was finally released to go home.
After some time, someone came into her hospital private suite.
Kirsten's eyes dilated in surprise, seeing the same scrawny man who was the stand in groom during the wedding.
"Mrs. Roosevelt, I'm Steven, Mr. Roosevelt's assistant," Steven politely said and had his head lowered.
"Did he ask you to pick me?" Kirsten sounded dispirited, she was slightly unhappy that her husband hadn't given time to pick her from the hospital.
"Mr. Roosevelt has a lot of things to deal with," Steven could not look her in the eyes.
"No need for you to explain. I know he's a busy man and has no time to deal with small matters," Kirsten sounded a bit hurt. The smile etched on her face was somewhat bitter.
She should not expect him to treat her special. She's just nothing but a plaything to him.
Kirsten took the dress that was brought by Steven and went to the bathroom and changed.
She walked behind Steven and patients looked at the beautiful woman dressed in an elegant and expensive dress matched with pricey shoes following a scrawny gentleman in a suit.
Kirsten knew what was going on in their minds and slowed down to make the distance between him and Steven widen so that no one would mistake him for her husband.
Being the boss’s wife, Steven’s respect towards his boss was naturally extended to Kirsten. He opened the rear passenger seat door and Kirsten hopped into the car.
The ambience inside the car was exceptionally peaceful, possibly because Matthew wasn’t in the same space as her. She wondered what the man called her husband was doing at the moment.
The car was parked in a luxurious apartment building after an hour-long drive.
Steven rounded the car and opened the rear passenger door. After Kirsten stepped out of the car, Steven took the lead to the building.
He stood before a private elevator and pressed the button. The elevator opened, following the ding sound.
The opulence of the penthouse didn't stir a slightest excitement in her. In Kirsten’s view, it was just a luxurious cage for her.
A middle aged woman who just came out of the kitchen seemed to be waiting for her as her eyes lit up upon seeing Kirsten.
"Welcome home, madam. I am Gemma, your helper," the woman warmly said, giving her a bright and sincere smile.
Kirsten, who had always been a warm person, instantly warmed up with the way the lady welcomed her. Making her feel at home.
"Thank you," she smiled brightly. It's her first bright smile after she had been married to Matthew.
She was consoled that at least she had someone to warm her heart.
A bed warmer like her needed a person like this lady, who would remind her that she had her family waiting for her to come back to them intact.
Whole? She's no longer intact. She will go back to them as a broken person.
The thought made her heart crack, nevertheless, she didn't want to have a pity party again. She reminded herself to keep her composure.
"I have to go, Mrs. Roosevelt. If you need anything, please feel free to call me," Steven handed the card reluctantly.
He just felt it wasn't right that his boss had him take care of his wife like a nanny. He was trained as an executive assistant and not a nanny.
It's just that he had been working for his boss for so long and that even when others said he was ruthless, Matthew had been a good boss. So he couldn't say no or complain to him.
Kirsten looked at the card. Her eyes dull and her lips curled up in a bitter smile, with a slight quivering lips, she said, " I will."
Gemma prepared many dishes as a welcome dinner. But the food on the table was barely touched as the master of the house was absent during the dinner, leaving Kirsten to dine alone.
She asked Gemma to join her but Gemma declined thinking that anytime, Matthew would come home anytime.
In the middle of the night, while Kirsten was fast asleep, she was startled when she heard the bathroom door closed with a bang.
Still in daze, she was trying to make out where she was and let out a sigh when she remembered she was in her husband's penthouse.
Knowing how strict the security in the building was, Kirsten was sure that the one who entered the bathroom was her husband.
She went back to sleep but was woken up again when she was abruptly pulled into someone's embrace.
She felt a warm breath landing on her ear. Kirsten tried to free herself from the man's arms, only for him to tighten his hold until Kirsten couldn't move and it was almost hard to breathe.
"Trying to leave me before our contract is over?" Matthew bit her earlobe after he spoke. "Bear this in your mind. If you leave before the contract is over, I will come for your family."
Kirsten gulped as she knew the man wasn't saying an empty threat. She had no idea about Matthew's identity but she had a feeling that he would do as he threatened.
Moreover, her family will not only experience Matthew's wrath but Mr. Rossi's wrath as well.
"Understood?" He tightened his hand around her waist, making her wince in pain.
"Ouch!" Kirsten hissed in pain, Matthew withdrew his hand from her waist but held her shoulder turning her around to see her face.
"Answer me!" He spoke coldly, Kirsten's body trembled in fright.
"Y - yes," Kirsten said, tears started to roll down as she couldn't contain them within her rims.
In the dimly lit room, her tears sparkled as light reflected in them. Matthew caught sight of this and his agitation dissipated right away. Matthew slid his hand up her head and pressed the side of her face against his chestHer ear was pressed against his chest enabled her to hear the erratic beating of his heart. She was utterly confused why his heartbeat sounded like music in her ears and liked hearing it. It was Sunday the following day, Matthew already left when Kirsten opened her eyes. Kirsten wondered about her husband's whereabouts. It's Sunday today, he should be home today. She mused on if she married a workaholic. Kirsten took her phone to call Matthew, however, indecision caught her up. After a long time of deliberating with herself if she should or shouldn't call, finally, she decided to call. Her heart galloped like a buck as she heard the ringback. But the call was unanswered. She retried and this time the call was rejected. Like a deflated balloon, Kirsten ploppe
When the bowl was nearly filled, Matthew put it down on top of the table. Kirsten stared at the bowl of soup before her. She wasn’t sure if the soup was really for her. She didn't touch the bowl of soup in front of her and observe Matthew. He took the empty bowl before her. Filled it with soup, then he placed it before him and started to eat. So it was really for her. He didn't accidentally place the bowl of soup before her. A smile broke through her face and she said, "Thank you." But her happiness was mixed with a bit of dejection that he didn't make as much of a grunt to respond. The meal was spent in a very uncomfortable note as Matthew just ate without glancing at her nor tried to make small chat with her. As a law student, Kirsten was used to talking with people. She was trained to have a good skill in communicating with people because she has to talk to clients and she'll need it during legal counsels and legal proceedings such as court hearings. But facing her husband
"Kristen? Did I hear the voice of a man?" James asked, a gust of anxiety and jealousy flurried into his heart. "I have to hang up, I'm still at work." Kirsten ended the call before any of the two men could speak again. Matthew was displeased to hear her lie. "Who is that and why did you lie?" Matthew asked, his cold voice made Kirsten tremble. However she quickly recovered and answered back. "A friend. And I wasn't lying, remember I am working for you. Am I right?" She responded and sidled away from him, completely forgetting her reason why she came to the kitchen. Matthew watched with a scowl as Kirsten walked out of the kitchen. He followed her to the bedroom and she was already under the sheet. Her eyes were closed and her back was facing his side of the bed. She didn’t move a bit even when she felt the sheet being lifted and he climbed onto the bed. All of a sudden, a hand was pressed against her shoulder and she was turned to face him. Too sudden, leaving her stunned
“She’s my –” Kirsten interjected, not letting him finish and greeted him nonchalantly. “Good evening, Mr Roosevelt.” “Good evening, Mrs Roosevelt,” Matthew answered, throwing Kirsten into confusion. Except Matthew, everyone was shocked. Taking advantage of Monalisa’s shock, he freed his arm from her grip and pulled Kirsten from James' side to his side. Now, Kirsten was standing beside him with his hand resting around her tiny waist, displaying a possessive gesture. “Hi, I am Kirsten's husband,” Matthew said to James, whose lips were pursed into a thin line. He reached out his hand for a handshake. James accepted the offer and shook his hand. Only the two of them knew how much force they used in the handshake. They were trying to crush each other's hand. None of them winced and the handshake was broken after a while. ‘No wonder why she was wearing a brand that only wealthy people could buy.’ James thought. James felt as if his heart was being wrung like a washcloth. He had b
Matthew looked down at the woman in his arms. His face looked even more lugubrious than usual. He wanted to open her skull and look at her brain. Isn't she a law student? Why is she dumb? Lifting her chin using three of his fingers, he spoke slowly with a low voice while keeping his annoyance at bay. "Did our contract say we are going to keep our marriage secret?" Considering her health he couldn't bear to scold or berate her. While they were in a contract marriage, still, she was his lawful wife. He must take care of her as he didn’t want to look for another pawn to marry. It would complicate things even more if another woman was involved. This time he would make sure that before this marriage was over, everything would be in its place as he had planned. "No, but since we got married in secret you want this marriage kept hidden." Her lawyer's instinct kicked up, defending her case. "I have no intention in keeping this marriage secret, my little wife." He has his reasons why he
Per instruction by her husband, in the afternoon, Kirsten went for a walk but this time she asked Tony to drive her to the park. With Tony here, she wouldn’t have to worry when it rained. Kirsten had been walking in the park for about fifteen minutes when her phone buzzed and she took out her phone. "Where are you?" Kirsten held her chest when she heard Matthew's voice as her heart began to beat more rapidly. "In the park, walking," she replied. A few minutes of interlude went by before Matthew spoke again. "Open your camera."'Is he having doubts about me?’ She made a face as this thought came across her mind. At the time she opened her camera, Kirsten had no idea that her face was revealed on the big screen in the conference hall. Her blue eyes made a beautiful contrast with her wavy auburn hair and her cheeks a shade of pink complimented by her luscious red lips. Matthew laid his back on his swivel chair, staring at the woman on the screen. "Did you bring an umbrella with
Norman's wrinkles got even deeper as he narrowed his eyes and frowned. This grandson of his was getting more and more out of hand. He could no longer control him. "Bring her home tonight. I want to meet my granddaughter-in - law." Norman couldn't do anything but to compromise at this time. When Matthew was still working at the family's company, Matthew had to bend to his will. With force he managed to persuade Matthew to get engaged with Monalisa but after five years Monalisa broke free from the engagement. Monalisa went to Hollywood when the opportunity of making a name in the film industry was presented to her. She had no qualm when she called off her engagement with Matthew. Monalisa was a whimsical woman and Matthew accommodating her capricious attitude was a testament of his great love for her. He thought that Matthew learned to love Monalisa as he pampered and spoiled Monalisa for the five years they have been together. However, it's been three months since the engagement wa
Kirsten was consumed by her own thoughts and did not pay attention to gasps and whispering in the lobby. She entered the elevator and pressed the button to where the law firm was. Within a minute the elevator halted with a chime and opened. Kirsten ambled towards her designated table. She had been interning in this law firm for three summers, this was the only time she will be interning here while having classes at law school. It was a paid internship as she and Anthony Dumont, the firm's boss, were friends. Anthony was also her teacher at the law school. Comparing her salary from the firm and Mr. Rossi's Restaurant, the law firm, offered her a better salary but it was too far from the university. Hence, she could only come here for an internship every summer. A litigation attorney asked her to research relevant laws and legal precedents that apply to their client’s case. She was also told to review all the evidence related to the case which included witness statements, medical
