Ellie heard the men talking, but she didn’t want to give Alonso his fifteen minutes of fame. He’d had more than his chance when the elders granted her to him. She’d been fifteen at the time and he’d been twenty-five. He ignored her then and now she was making something of herself. He probably wanted his share of it. Or all of it and he’d run it into the ground like everything else he got his hands into. She’d seen him take an interest in two other women. One he abandoned when she became pregnant with his kits and the other, they found at the bottom of a stairwell in the Den’s building. No one knew if she fell, killed herself, or he pushed her. It was part of the reason Ellie avoided him at all costs. He was greedy scum, and she would have been little more than a slave and piggy bank.
