Chapter 5

“I’m rich, I’m rich, I’m rich” Brittany sang as she danced her way to the hotel exit “I woke up one day and I was rich, all I had to do was wear a wedding ring and a wedding dress and boom, I became rich, rich, rich, rich. The people who looked down on me now look up to me why because I’m rich, I’m rich, I’m rich, I’m rich!” As she carried her make up kit out of the hotel she smiled a smile of satisfaction and walked to the bus stop. She immediately took off her wedding band and threw it away and stopped a cab making straight to her rooftop apartment.

Paparazzi had already taken pictures of her stopping a cab without her wedding band on unknown to her. When she got to her apartment the landlady had already gotten a group of people to break into her room and throw her things out. She ran onto the scene and tried to catch the things that were flying out.

“Oh no! Oh no! Mrs. Roberts don’t treat me like this, I’ll pay all I owe you” she pleaded.

“I was a fool to believe that statement 6 months ago and I’ll be a bigger fool if I believe it again” she yelled. “Throw them all out” she ordered the men.

“Mrs. Roberts, I know I haven’t been truthful to you but this time I swear I’ll pay all I owe and even pay in advance” Brittany begged.

“With what money? You told me you were making money from your vlog I checked and you had only 10 subscribers and 30 hate comments, how will such a vlog pay your rent?” Mrs. Roberts yelled.

“I know I let you down, but this money isn’t from vlogging, this one is from a good source, I promise you by tomorrow morning I’ll send you everything including your advance payment” she begged.

The old woman looked at her for a while and decided not to believe her this time round.

“No!” She yelled “if you have money now, do yourself and I a big favor and find yourself a new place”

Brittany continued pleading while her clothes flew out. The paparazzi that had begun to tail her had decided to capture the spectacular moment too.

Long after the dark Brittany sat outside parking all her things into her suitcases and some cardboard boxes.

“Well guess I have nowhere to sleep tonight, why don’t I just go drink my sorrows away, by morning my payments will be made and I’ll be able to start my life afresh”

She gathered her belongings and set off happily for the bar.

When she got there she sat at the counter and happily tapped on it

“Give me the best punch you have, today is a happy day”

“Bre… why didn’t you tell me you were getting married? I thought we were friends?” Lora quizzed.

“What, where did you hear that from?” Brittany asked in utter shock.

“It’s all over social media, you got married to no other than Cole, Cole Williams… wow! How could you keep such a secret from me?” Lora complained.

Brittany was beyond shocked to find out that the news had travelled so fast, she wasn’t expecting such a wide coverage of such an event. At most she only thought it was a commercial and she had been lucky to be used as a backup model for Luna. She had never sat down to process what had happened.

“I got married to Cole?” She exclaimed.

“Hey… are you high? Or you have a twin? Look at this” Lora took out her phone and showed her the articles online.

“All you need to know about Brittany, Cole Williams’ beloved wife” one article read. She gasped and coughed so loudly that Lora offered her water.

“You didn’t know anything about this? Is that your clone then?” Lora quizzed.

“No… no…. I thought it was a commercial? I didn’t think it was a real wedding” Brittany tried to explain.

“What? You must be drunk, I’m hurt that all along you had such a rich husband and you kept it from me” Lora moaned. “Anyways I’m happy for you, finally you won’t be in debts anymore, this could even help your vlog…”

“No… this isn’t about a husband… you don’t understand… this wasn’t supposed to be a public… wait it was going to be public eventually why didn’t I think about that you dumb, dumb, dummy!” Brittany harshly chastised herself.

Lora wondered what had come over her friend, for someone who had married a superstar she was being very weird about it. Maybe she was trying to prevent her from probing further into her marriage. Maybe Cole forbade her to talk about their private lives to anyone.

“I get it Bre you don’t want me in your business but I respect that… let’s toast to your new home” Lora said and poured herself some wine and poured some for Brittany too.

“Yeah… cheers to my new home… I really need to find a new home…” Brittany responded haggardly and tapped glasses with Lora. As the happily drunk the evening away.

The paparazzi flashed their cameras at the drunk Brittany and prepared themselves for the next morning news.

Brittany woke up that morning and made her way out of Lora’s house. She checked her phone and smiled her payments were in. She made her way out of Lora’s house with the intention of going to beg her landlady to accept her payment and let her back in her apartment. She merrily stepped onto the sidewalk and was met with a mob of reporters who were asking questions at the same time and flashing their cameras at her. She didn’t look her best and wasn’t in the right frame of mind to answer any questions. She immediately took to her heels not sure exactly where she was running to.
