22. My Birthday

I gaped in disbelief at what had happened to our living room.

OK, I know it's my birthday, but balloons and a big cake? Did he forget that I no longer celebrated birthdays many years ago?

"What is this?" I asked Dad, who was busy preparing some dishes for the table.

"I have to attend an important meeting out of town; I'm sorry for not being able to celebrate your birthday. I prepared this so you can celebrate it with your friends," Dad said as he came closer to me.

Dad smiled broadly before finally hugging me tightly.

"I have missed a lot, not realizing that you are already a very beautiful girl! If your mom were alive, she would be very jealous because you are much prettier than her!" Dad looked at me with a gentle gaze.

I can't hide my smile. I'm pleased to hear it. I know my mom is very pretty, so it's nice to hear Dad compliment me like that.

But the thing is if I have a friend I can invite,

Dad took a card out of his wallet and gave it to me.

"Gift," Dad said with a warm smile.
