Chapter 941

After he had said his piece, Yousef did not immediately reach for his phone. Instead, he fixed Zeke and the rest with a steady gaze that spoke volumes.

Zeke, along with several police officers, paled at the mention of taking the issue to state police headquarters. The thought of Mr. Yach from the state getting wind of that was enough to make them sick with worry. It would not just be them facing the music; Mr. Mosier and their chief would be dragged into the mess as well.

However, their hands were tied by the ironclad directive from their superiors: no matter who came forward, Yankel was not to be released.

Caught between a rock and a hard place, Zeke was torn. He could not afford to alienate either side, and it was tearing him up inside.

After a tense half-minute, Zeke steeled himself and, with a heavy heart, offered Yousef an apologetic look. "Mr. Bristow, I'm really sorry. Our hands are tied. The truth is, we've got orders that Yankel can't be bailed out. I'm truly sorry."
