Narrators narrative;
Derrick is sited in silence beside his sister. They are both glaring at the television but have their minds in separate places.
Their father walks into the living room and furrows his brows when he finds Esther resting on her brother, and Derricks arm around her.
It's been years since he saw his children this close to each other without yelling at each other, trying to show supremacy over the other, or fighting, and this seems like the perfect opportunity to tell his children what's been on his mind.
After so many years of isolation and depression, he has finally found the little light bright enough to light up his world.
Esthers POV; I stand before the mirror in my room staring at my stomach. It's growing round and is becoming noticable. A woman on the streets I usually buy things from, even made an innocent joke about it. "Ah, madam, this one wey your belle don dey big like this, hope all dey well? "(Wow, madam, now that your stomach is getting big, hope all's well?) I was forced to laugh but it hit me. Every passing day slips into a week, which slips into weeks, and then another month! It would have been funny if I knew I wasn't pregnant, but it isn't funny cause I am actually housing a baby! Soon this pregnancy would be four months old, the whole world will soon see it. My father will soon notice! My life is sliping out of my hands and I'm battling to catch it with oily fingers. School was meant to resume a while back, but thanks to ASUU(Academic Staff Union of Universities) strike, we've been as
Derricks POV; "Opeyemi please. " "Don't come any closer! "She screams tightening her grip on the rail. "Ope, at least listen to me." I plead "No! Think I don't know what this is? I read everything! And to think I loved you! "She screams. "Ope, I love you! This all one big misunderstanding. "I beg. "You think I don't know you're saying all this just to avoid my blood being on your hands? "She quizzes. "Ope! "I scold as I make to move towards her. "I said stay back! "She screams as she presses her body against the railing. "No, no, no please don't do it! It was a mistake. This is a misunderstanding. It's not what you think.... Calm down..." I beg in fear. Trying to make her see reason. "Liar! I saw everything. You called me another play thing.
Derricks POV; 'Hey hon, 'The message reads and I smile dryly at my phone. Lisa. Lisa has been the only person who has ever been able to clip my wings apart from Ope. I'm a sex addict and haven't been able to mend my ways. Even after Opes death, I tried, I really did, but as my people say, you can never keep a pig from filth for too long. I always end up going back. I kept changing girls like clothes, till I crossed paths with Lisa. I remeber when I first met her. I bumped into her at Next supermarket and couldn't take my eyes off her. Her mild but still striking resemblance to Ope stroke several cords in my heart. And one look at her elegant figure awakened the sex addict in me. That very day I paid for all she came to buy, helped her get her things to the car, and even got her number. Lisa is just a mysterious as my Ope used to be. So beautiful, calm, unpredi
Dayos POV; I was in my bedroom working on my laptop when Temi suddenly barged in and draged my doors keys. She ran out before I could say anything and next thing I know, Esther stumbles into the room and falls to the ground. I quickly rise to check on her. Honestly hoping she didn't fall on her stomach. "Bukola! "Esther screams. "You're not coming out till you and daddy settle your fight! "Bukola screams back and my eyes pop. What the? "What's going on?" I question Esther as I sqwat beside her and pull her up. "They think we're fighting." Esther replies and my brows furrow. "What makes them think so? "I quiz. Esther glances at me and suddenly becomes t ense again and overly aware of her environment. "I, I, I don't know. "She replies freeing herself from my grip. What is
Esthers POV; I dump my body on my bed and exhale in exhaustion. I lay on my back and closes my eyes. I suddenly recall the feel of Dayos lips on mine and this causes me to quickly sit up. I draw my fingers to my lips and touch them in disbelief. As if touching them would help me ascertain if I actually kissed one of my brothers best friends. The particular one who's older than my brother with five years and me with ten! "What was I thinking? "I question myself audibly. "Why did I do it? "I quiz again. I sit straight. Deep in thought. Dayo kissed me too. What could that mean? Why did I do it? Why didn't he yell or scream at me? Why did he kiss me too? What on earth made me do that? Is it because I need a shoulder to cry on? Is it because I don't want to loose the second pillar I have and am trying to hold h
Esthers POV; I am busy making a diary entry when I hear a knock on my rooms door. "Yes? "I call. "May I come in?" My brothers voice replies and I look down at the book before me. I'm toast if he should read even a single page of this book. "Hold on a minute. "I call before stuffing the sparkling, hard cover, pink book in the secret compartment of my drawer I made for it. "Come in. "I call once I'm done and Derrick pops his head in. "Hey, "He says as he walks in and shuts the door behind him. "Hi. "I reply with a smile. "I got you something. "He says and my forehead creases. "Unripe mangoes. I heard they are good for pregnant women. "He replies placing a white Polly bag on the study table before which I'm sitting.
Dayos POV; I just foolishly blurted out the truth to Esther's father. We never wanted him to find out this way but in all honesty, I am more concerned about Esther's well-being than her father's temper. I bite my tongue as I look down at the worried Esther. This is most definitely too much for her to take as she soon passes out in my arms. In fear, I quickly pick her up and dash up the stairs. "Derrick, call a doctor! "I scream, making it up the stairs. Only once I'm up, do I realize I've never been up here before so I don't know her room. "Derrick where is Esther's room? " I question in confusion. "Second room on your right. " Derrick calls back and I obey his instruction. I make it into the beautiful and fairly large room. It's neat to say the least. I I rush over to the bed and drop Esther's
Esthers POV; "What? "My father questions more calmly as he makes his way to my bed and sits beside me. "You were rapped? When did this happen? "My father questions. Taking my left cheek in his palm in ever so sweet affection. I gulp before answering "Three months ago. "And he freezes. "What? "He questions in pure confussion and I look up at Derrick before answering. "I didn't know I was rapped till I tested positive for pregnancy. We then connected the dots and found out how the child came about." I reply and my father looks over at Derrick who in turn looks away. His mood is still sore. "Tell me dear, who did this? "My father questions and I watch my heart jump out of the window. "Answer me dear. "My father persuades and I look up at Derrick. Begging him with my eyes not to let me do this alone.
