Chapter 62

Joan’s POV

What if he was keeping me away from mom? What if she was not okay and he didn’t want to tell me? My mind journeyed far and wide for something—just a trace of abnormality—but I had nothing, and soon, the sermon came to an end.

“I will follow you to class; meet me any slight break you have,” he said. Still holding my hands, he led me through the crowd. My weary eyes glided through the fleet of murmuring students, all heading through various passages to the lecture halls.

It was as though we were competing for the gates of heaven, with people pushing each other; their civilization died when the order was given to move into various classes. Fred made way for me with his hands and firm tone; ladies didn’t need much to keep Scott away from the premises as they were smitten by him.

Soon enough, we were now at the front of the crowd with him pulling me from behind, and he led me to my class.
