Chapter 49 - Lucid

“Oh,” is all he can say. Liam loosens his hand on my arm and steps back. After a while, he sits heavily on the couch. “You don’t love me, huh,” he whispers.

My heart drops as soon as I hear the defeat in his voice. I can’t help but feel a pang of regret as I look down at him. I take a deep breath to steady myself, trying to make sense of the conflicting emotions that are raging inside me.

I am about to move to him when he says, “Based on our intimate moments together, the way you scream my name, the way you respond to my touches, and the way you cling onto me as if your very life depends on it... I really thought we had formed a bond.”

He looks up at me again and asks, “But it’s not the same for you, huh?”

Even if I am frustrated at him, the way his voice sounds breaks my heart as well. I want to say sorry, but what will it do? It won’t fix anything, right?

Instead, I ask, “You say you love me, but why?” I kneel before him and lightly touch his face.

“What do you mean?” he asks.
