Chapter twenty-seven

David's POV 

I turn the engine off and look over at Charlotte.

God, this is my worst nightmare. 

How do you tell a kid you're his father when you can't wrap your head around the idea of it yourself? When you don't even believe that it's possible?

I know it's true, he looks identical to me, and yet somehow, I feel like I'm in a bad dream. That any second Charlie is going to laugh and say that this is all a bad joke. Then we can pick up where we left off six years ago.

I don't want to resent her... but I can't help it. How could she hide this from me? 

I wish my phone would go off with an urgent message saying that I'm needed on a job somewhere. That there's something wrong in a building site and they need me right away. I want to be anywhere else but here.

I grip the steering wheel in my hands as I try to picture how this is going to go. How would I have felt if some stranger turned up and announce
