“How’s I12 progressing Eva?” Chris asked once everyone left the room. “Beautifully...” Darcy chuckled “I can’t wait to see the bitch’s face when everything unveils.” Darcy: “What’s your plan? How long are you going to keep this on for?” “Not yet…. The higher you fly, the greater the fall.” Chris narrowed his eyes, his lips curled sinisterly “Doesn’t she like to have kids??? Won’t it be disappointing if we don’t give her that opportunity?” “More importantly, I need to have all the evidence… an iron clad case against fraud and identity theft.” Chris tapped his fingers rhythmically on the armrest. “Don’t we have Thomas?” Darcy asked in confusion “Thomas said that he is confident to win the case with his eyes closed with what we have so far…” “No” Chris shook his head “Not eldest brother-in-law. We will be winning the case with a junior intern from eldest brother-in-law’s firm. It will be a case won not by brilliance of the lawyer…. but by the sheer volume of indisputable evidence.”
The rest of the week passed in a flurry of activity. Everyone was swept off their feet; running their personal businesses, pretending that there was nothing out of the normal with their better halves and running errands that had self-assigned after volunteering to help Chris with his investigation. Firstly, Lorenzo executed both the tasks he was delegated to perfection. He didn’t have any trouble sneaking in and out of the hospital with archived data of everything related to the hospital, whether it was surveillance footage, finance or confidential information related to hospital records or clinical trials that were run by the hospital. Sofia had done the legwork making his work effortless. She had provided them with not just access cards but also habits and behaviors of the staff whose access cards they were using. This was especially useful as they could sneak in and out without having to sabotage anyone. Of course, this wasn’t industrial espionage, and they weren’t going to sell o
Chris drove all the way to his home base without stopping; Both Emile and Grace were comfortable in the caravan and slept comfortably on the bed while Chris rested on the sofa. Once they reached their home base, Chris didn’t disturb either Emile or Grace and rested along with them in the caravan while he let both Night Rider and the rest head upstairs for a power nap before driving out to the airport. It wouldn’t have made a difference to their plan to give Darcy a surprise birthday gift even if Emile and Grace went upstairs to rest since Darcy was away with Marcus on his long-awaited ski trip…. well not really long … but to a father who missed 20 years of his son’s life, even a second is a long time… Even so, Chris didn’t wake them and cramped on the sofa. The reason was not hard to guess…. He didn’t want to interrupt his beloved wife’s sweet sleep. Grace was just basking in the shade of Emile’s pampered treatment. Chris waited for the two to wake up naturally; Of course, Grace wok
Emile shook her head helplessly. She couldn’t blame Grace; She had to admit that she too was quite shaken when she saw the scene before her, even though she knew the story. She couldn’t imagine what was going through Grace’s head. Chris face palmed inwardly ‘How could he forget that this was Eva’s favorite coffee shop?’ The others just looked on like blind men watching the show as they couldn’t understand heads or tails. Emile decided not to have coffee anymore and followed Grace. Once Emile walked off, Chris couldn’t care less about the authenticity of the play they were directing and hurriedly ran after his wife. Night Wing calmly went to the counter and ordered coffee and light snacks for everyone. He requested the waiter to deliver the food to their car and followed the rest of the group back to the car. Grace didn’t talk to anyone for the rest of the trip. Emile wanted to pacify her many times, but she had a ‘do not approach’ sign board on her face. Grace wasn’t intentionall
On the screen was Darcy but he was dressed very differently to the Darcy they had just met. The one onscreen was fully dressed up in skiing gear; from his appearance and voice, it didn’t look like he had just changed. It looked more like he had been skiing for a while and just stopped to pick up the phone. His googles were anchored on his helmet and his eyes filled with worry. “Chris, everything okay at home?” Grace looked at the man onscreen in shock. It could be seen from the background that it looked like he was somewhere in the mountains; more importantly, there were no mountains fit for skiing close to the airport café, where he would be able to reach in 1 hour and start skiing. Darcy didn’t even give second glance at the woman behind Chris who was staring at him without blinking. He was getting anxious about the mess at home considering Chris called him at this time when he should have been showing off the last few weeks of his handiworks to Emile considering they had just ret
Birthday celebrations were a huge affair for the Walters; it was bigger than any festival they celebrated. However, Darcy stopped celebrating his birthday on a grand scale after Grace left. No matter who tried to convince him, it didn’t have any effect. After Marcus was born, it became a small affair of a family get together celebrated at the main house; this was mainly because Marcus wouldn't come over if there was no occasion. Eva’s arrogance and selfishness had reached new heights. Even though she knew that birthdays were a family affair for the Walters, she reminded Darcy that he had promised her that they would go away on a beach holiday to celebrate his birthday, just the two of them. Darcy was not convinced and kept asking her details of when he made the promise. Eva was not an ordinary woman to stumble when asked; She lied without even blinking “It was a long time ago. It is not a surprise that you forgot, that wasn’t a pleasant time.” “Oh???” Darcy raised his eyebrows. “Yo
“About what?” Elizabeth asked, even more anxiously than before. “Cough…. Cough….” Adam cleared his throat and continued with a sheepish smile “Remember what I previously told you when we got the news of Darcy meeting with an accident?” “Yes….” Elizabeth nodded and mumbled “Things might not be what we think it is and not to be sad???” “Um” Adam twisted his lips as he muttered “what I was telling was…” “Mom, what dad wanted to tell you was second brother didn’t really have an accident and he didn’t want you to be sad for no reason.” Chris couldn’t bear to watch his father squirm; his father was his idol. The other reason Chris was brave was because Emile knew everything…. But for now, let’s give him credit! “What are you talking about?” Veronica was the first blurt out “We all saw how he came back.” “Right….” Chris nodded as he paused before asking “And we all send him off on his trip to Hawaii, right?” Veronica didn’t respond; she just rolled her eyes, while Nola and Angel nodded
Darcy had a fabulous birthday for the first time in 20 years even though the celebrations still only included their closest family and friends; he hadn’t been this happy in a very long time. It could be seen in his demeanor as well; he was back to his old self. Chris’s villa was filled with laughter and happiness. Adam and Elizabeth were the first ones to leave, leaving space for the younger generation to muck around. The little ones were all packed off with their parents, it wasn’t that hard as most of them had already dosed off. Adam and Elizabeth had given their birthday present to Darcy before they left, contrary to the usual practice of presenting gifts when everyone gathered in the living room after the guests left. Firstly, there were no guests and secondly, they volunteered to chaperone the little ones. “What is mom and dad’s gift?” Eric asked curiously as they gathered around the fireplace. Darcy opened the small box to reveal a pair of exquisite cufflinks and passed it ar
