"Where am I?" a voice interrupted and I flinched, turning my head to find Laura sitting up.

She rubbed her eyes, looking around in confusion. Keith immediately moved back to her side, his concern evident.

"You're at my family's house," Keith explained gently. "You had a rough night, but you're safe now."

I felt like an outsider in that moment, standing in the doorway of a scene that seemed too intimate, too complicated. I forced a polite smile and stepped back. "I'll give you two some privacy," I said, my voice sounding more distant than I intended.

As I was about to start leaving, I felt Keith's hand grab mine. His eyes stared into mine convincingly as if telling me to stay.
