Anne
“What should I be doing?” Vincent asked resting his elbows on the small kitchen island.
I was shocked that I could still stay sane in the same room with him after assaulting my eyes with all his masculinity.
“Uh…you can start by bringing out the frying pan and spatula while I put the pasta on the stove,” I answered.
“Yes ma’am,” he said leaning off the island. I subtly smiled sheepishly at his response.
He reached up behind him and unhung the frying pan, then slowly turned to face me, a confused look plastered on his face.
“What’s wrong?” I asked, mirroring his confusion.
“Err… the thing is… I know a spatula is used for frying and stuffs like that but I have no idea what it looks like,” he said meekly, scratching the back of his head.
Honestly, I didn’t know how to respond. He looked so cute just standing there with a frying pan in hand.
We stood there, staring at each other, then gradually, our lips began moving, stretching in sync, till we were both reeling with laughter.
I had always seen Vincent as someone who had everything under control. Someone who always knew what he was doing and all that. That was why I found it both adorable and hilarious. He was human after all.
“Hey, what so funny, Anny?” I heard Andrew ask, walking into the kitchen.
Vincent and I looked at Andrew at the same time, then burst out laughing again.
He stared from me to his brother like we were going crazy.
“She found my lack of knowledge of kitchen utensils hilarious,” Vincent explained.
Andrew doubled over with laughter.
“Great, so I’m a clown,” Vincent stated, feigning annoyance. He returned to his leaning position on the kitchen island, right after dropping the frying pan on the counter.
“And here we all thought you were going to ace cooking,” Andrew taunted.
I couldn’t stop the laughter even as I tried. The look on Vincent’s face was priceless. He had leaned off the kitchen island looking stunned. Andrew would have been roasted alive if Vincent could shoot out flames from his dagger stare.
“Yea, yea, laugh all you want,” Vincent said dismissively, “I’ll get the hang of it in the nearest future,” he added, moving to get the eggs from the refrigerator.
“Now I want to help,” Andrew whined, coming to look over my shoulders, slightly pressing against my back.
“How may I help?” He whispered into my ear making me tingle.
“You can chop the onions and carrots while Vincent beat the eggs. I will make the sauce,” I said, rubbing my ears against my shoulders to stop the sensation.
We worked together, talking, bantering, and laughing at jokes Andrew made. It was a miracle we didn’t burn the food.
Andrew kept on whining and complaining that the onions were making him cry, then protested that Vincent was beating the eggs wrongly.
Vincent on his side dropped an egg and blamed Andrew for distracting him, going ahead to complain that Andrew was making an onion and carrot mash, instead of slices.
I was aching to have them out of the kitchen to stop messing the place up but then again, they made it fun and enjoying with their clumsiness and constant banter.
Thirty minutes later, we were done cooking the food that would have been finished in fifteen minutes if they had done their part well.
I dished out the food on our separate plates. Andrew and I carried ours to the living room while Vincent opted to eat in his study. I was a bit sad. I’d wanted us to continue our bickering but I guess he was really into books, and less of human company.
At about eight o’clock and after two movies later, I stretched my muscles, stood up, ready to go.
Andrew pulled me back on the couch, holding my hand hostage.
“Anny, stay with me longer! Pretty please,” he pouted, rubbing at his eyes to remove the sleep.
Yea, he slept through half of the second movie.
“I gotta go Drew. I’ve got to wake up early,” I said dragging my hand.
“Okay, but I will be coming to pick you tomorrow?” He pleaded with his hands gummed together, giving me the puppy eye.
“Uh…”
“No arguments, I don’t wanna see you lonely in that godforsaken hostel. Besides, your food was yum, I wanna have it again,” He finished with a cute smile.
“And you call me a whiny baby,” I said rolling my eyes.
“You taught me well,” he said laughing, earning himself a smack from me.
“Vincent! Anny’s leaving!” Andrew screamed at the top of his lungs. I flinched, covering my ears from the piercing sound of his voice.
“My ears are bleeding!” I cried out.
“Sorry,” he apologized.
Vincent ran down the stairs in seconds, coming to stand in front of me, looking straight at me wordlessly.
‘Hello!’
“Who taught you how to cook so well?”
His stares were making me unable to blink.
“Uh…my mum?” I said, feeling the rush of heat to my cheeks.
“Aww, now you’re making her blush,” Andrew cooed from behind me.
He knew I was going to smack him, so he escaped before I got a chance to.
“It was delicious,” Vincent praised, pinching my cheek gently.
“Thank you both. I had a great time,” I said, trying to ignore the slight effect that single pinch had on me.
“We should be thanking you, we had a splendid time with you,” Vincent said casually.
“Ok, ok, let’s go,” that was Andrew, dragging me off towards the door.
As we were about to leave, Vincent called out.
“And Anne!”
I turned.
“No drinking, okay? We don’t want you seeing celebrities now, would we?” he asked with a knowing smirk.
‘What!!!...he knew?’
I must have turned every shade of red because Andrew burst out laughing beside me and ran down the flight of stairs when I turned to face him.
“Bye!” I squeaked and ran after Andrew.
“Hey! You’ve gotta tell me everything that happened that night or else I won’t talk to you ever!” I threatened Andrew when I reached his bike, fuming with embarrassment.
“Alright, alright. Just calm down. When we get to your hostel, I’ll tell you everything. Hop on,” he said, flinging his long leg forward and over his power bike.
Andrew
Her arms were wrapped around me in a death grip as we sped to her hostel. I didn’t want to stop riding and let her let go. If I wasn’t riding, I would have placed both arms over hers, but that would be awkward.
I had been thinking all this while that what I felt for her was mere attraction and huge respect but lately, I couldn’t stop myself from thinking about her or wanting to spend time with her.
My interest in other girls was dwindling quite rapidly and I didn’t know why.
Like today, I was supposed to spend time with Mindy, one of my girls but I felt like it was a waste of my time. I love girls. I love having fun with them. But with Anny, it was something else. It’s like I wanted her to be involved in everything I did.
We arrived in front of her hostel and I turned to see how scared she was. She just sat there, her arm still around me. She had her face to the skies, taking deep breaths.
“Thrilling!” She exclaimed looking towards me, before jumping from the bike. I followed suit and parked my bike.
“So we are here, I can go now,” I joked, pretending to leave. She quickly grabbed my arm and dragged me towards the garden beside her hostel. The garden is called the “love garden”, a place where couples, friends, buddies meet. But at that time of the night, there were mostly couples sitting on block seats built and arranged in rows.
I relished in the feel of her hands as she tried to get me to sit down. I playfully refused to sit down, prolonging her touch on my body. It felt heavenly.
“Andrew please sit down,” she pushed.
I finally gave in and sat down, dragging her down to sit beside me.
“Now spill,” She deadpanned.
I started telling her what went down the night she got drunk.
Her facial expression went from shock to disbelief and then to surprise then back to shock.
“At least you surpassed a lot of dancers there that night, with moves that are out of this world,” I commended, gesturing her actions with my arms.
She covered her face with her hands, sighing into them.
“I can’t believe I did all those stuff you said,” she said solemnly.
“Hey, come on, don’t be like this,” I said taking her hands in mine. I made her face me. When her huge brown eyes stared into mine, everything I had in mind slowly slipped out of my head. I totally went blank.
‘What the f**k is wrong with me?’
My eyes traveled down to her soft pink lips. The sight of it suddenly tightened my groin, making it throb. If it wasn’t for the dark surroundings, it would have been visible for all to see. In another scenario, I would have relaxed back and allowed the ladies swoon over my pride, but here with Anne, I didn’t know what to expect, so it made me conscious of myself.
I wanted to kiss her so badly it hurts, but I also didn’t want to scare her away.
“Don’t feel bad Anny. I think you rocked that day,” I said, finally finding my words.
She looked at me under her lashes and I gritted my teeth beneath my lips to stop me from taking her lips there and then. It was a risk I wasn’t willing to make.
She inhaled and exhaled sharply.
“I’ll live Drew. No harm done,” she breathed out.
After a short while of silence, she stood up and stretched her limbs.
“It’s getting late Drew, come on.”
I looked at my wristwatch.
‘Wow.’
It was already half-past nine. As they say, time rushes by when you’re having a great time, right?
“Ok, we’ll see tomorrow,” I replied, gliding off the seat.
We strolled towards my bike in silence. I had a feeling she was distracted by the thought of something. I’d wanted to use that as an opportunity to take her hand, but I wasn’t bold enough.
This wasn’t me. I’d never felt so insecure and uncertain in my life.
“No goodbye kiss?” I teased, trying to feel a bit like myself.
I stared in disbelieve as she stood on her toes and gave me a peck on the cheek.
“I had a nice time with you guys,” she said with a smile.
That’ll have to do for now, I thought, placing my hand over my thumping heart.
“Bye Anny.”
“Bye weirdo.”
I laughed, climbed my bike, and drove off.
That night, I slept like a baby.
AnneAndrew's creative and sensational when it comes to composing music. His lyrics are beautiful. His thoughts and feelings convey poetic emotions that allow you to feel what he feels. His songs, most times, gave me goosebumps, and sometimes watery eyes. Other times, I’m cavorting unintelligently, moving to the fast-paced beats. He never failed to take me along on his musical rides.I’d gone to their apartment three more times since the first one. I spent all with Andrew, listening to him play and create new songs in his home studio, right inside his room. Honestly, it was fun. His songs gave out both nostalgic and refreshing feelings all at once.A few times, I had playfully sung along in my terrible voice. Trust me, it’s awful compared to Andrew's sweet tenor voice, yet, every time I tried stopping, he would smile and urge me to continue. I knew I had no hope when it came to singing but with the way Andrew gave me encouraging nods, I felt like I could compete with the likes of Celin
Anne For the past forty-five minutes, Vincent has been flipping through books like he was looking for something but wasn't finding it. On two occasions when I turned to glance at him, he was tossing a book aside and picking up another to continue his flipping exercise. I could tell he was frustrated because, in addition to the flipping and tossing, he kept on sighing. I was getting worried that he might start tearing his clothes and dragging his short hair next. Maybe I'm exaggerating but he was close to agitation. "Hey?" I found myself calling out. 'Typical you Anny.' He looked up from yet another flipping and stared at me. 'Go on Anne, finish what you've started, he'll flip and toss you next.' "Err…why don't you take a break...those books are exhausted already," I said smiling, hoping he got the joke. He exhaled heavily, pinching the bridge of his nose. To my surprise, he pulled back his chair and stood up. He stretched his whole body and then proceeded to walk slowly wit
Vincent Anne’s presence increasingly brightened my mood from the moment she walked in through the door until now. For the past few weeks, I’ve been feeling so frustrated and handicapped. My patient diagnosed with cancer has been getting worse and my efforts to help him came out futile. I can’t ascertain the reason for my mood change. Maybe, it’s the aura she exudes or how clumsy she gets. Whatever it was, it left me wondering. After the food we had, I had gone up to tidy Andrew’s room because I knew the storm wasn’t abetting anytime soon. I also knew she would be more comfortable staying in Andrew’s room where she’s more familiar with, rather than the guest room. I straightened Andrew’s bed and took my time to remove all his clothes lying around, then walked down the stairs to summon Anne. On reaching the living room, I noticed Anne was no longer sitting on the couch. I looked around but there was no sign of her. I didn’t hear her come upstairs and the storm was still raging, s
Anne I tried once again to draw my brows but ended up drawing a map to the treasure island. At least that’s what I thought it looked like. “It’s no use, I’ve messed up my face,” I sighed, looking up at my two stunning, gorgeously dressed roomies. They both gasped on seeing my face. “Anny! What have you done? You just couldn’t wait, could you?” That was Jane, the make-up artist. The party was today at 7 pm and It was 5 pm already. “Yikes, Jenny! Come on, it’s already five!” I wailed. Jane laughed at my nervousness and came over to do my hair and makeup. Andrew had invited Jane and Pamela to his dad’s party and they were so psyched about it. I was happier because I would be seeing more familiar faces other than that of Andrew and Vincent. With my friends, real fun was assured. They had both returned to school for the party and we went shopping a week prior for dresses and shoes to match. There, they helped me pick out a dress. Jane had on a strapless peach gown that hugged her
Anne ‘What just happened?’ I stared at nothing in particular. Andrew has led me off the stage after our almost kiss. His phone had vibrated and he had left in a hurry after seeing the caller ID. I wondered what would have happened if he didn’t receive the call. Would I have let him? I found my seat and collapsed on it, my mind reeling. What was going on between Andrew and me? He was going to kiss me and I would have let him. Was that what I wanted? I glanced around the room. Jane and Pamela were really enjoying themselves with their partners on the dance floor. Dr. and Mrs. Sawyer were moving around, smiling and talking with their guests. My eyes landed on Vincent who was dancing, well more like moving rigidly with the Barbie on the dance floor. The lady on his arms was all smiles, exposing her annoyingly beautiful dentition. I wondered if he would have been moving like that if I was the one in his arms. As if reading my mind, his head turned to me, and our eyes met. He sur
Anne I forced myself to look back up at his eyes which were now staring over my head towards Dr. Sawyer's office. His hands werr still holding my arms on both sides. "We'll catch up later, Anny. Gotta go help mum," he said looking down at me, those emotions almost gone from his eyes. He brought up his hands, held both sides of my face, then slowly bent over and slightly brushed his lips on my forehead. I held my breath in an attempt to stop my rapid breathing and my heart that adopted a new rhythm of missing beats. I nodded swiftly before he stepped back and walked towards the exit. I turned towards Mr. Sawyer's office and saw Andrew standing a few feet away from the office with the brightest smile I've ever seen. He walked, more like ran towards me. On reaching where I stood, he wrapped his arms around me, lifted me off the ground, then began swinging me around, laughing happily. "Anny! You did it!" He yelled joyfully. My heart swelled. "You mean he agreed?!" I asked eagerly
AnneAndrew’s flight was in the evening, so he had picked me up earlier to spend some time with him before he left. He also wanted me to help cheer Vincent up. Vincent's been cooped in his room since the previous day. According to Andrew, Vincent’s patient with cancer wasn’t getting any better. The male patient had decided that the best thing was to stop his chemo and all the drugs that made him sick. He was going to spend his last days with his family. Vincent was trying to recuperate from all that event, but all Andrew could see was his brother’s deteriorating mood. He was dreading leaving him in that state. We entered the house and headed straight to Vincent's room. I had imagined his room to be razor-sharp neat with everything in place. It was pretty close if not for the few books scattered all over the reading table and the rumpled bed where Vincent lay beneath the covers, with his eyes closed. His room was set in white and black contrast, the same as the living room. Some furn
Anne Downstairs, Andrew had already put the rice on the stove and was cutting the vegetables when he caught sight of our presence in the kitchen. He turned to us with a huge grin on his face. “Finally, you have managed to get that log of wood out of the bed,” he teased. Vincent picked up a frying pan and held it up in a threatening manner towards Andrew, daring him to say more. Andrew, on seeing this, raised his hands in surrender, then went back to his chopping with a mischievous glint on his face. We made lunch together and ate it in the living room, amidst chatting and banter. I’d grown so attached to the two brothers in the past few months to the extent one would think we’ve all known each other since childhood. *** We left for the airport in Vincent’s car and arrived 30minutes before departure. A crowd of Andrew’s friends was already at the airport waiting and they all started cheering when they spotted us. Some of them ran and lifted him off the ground amidst cheers, caus
