Rick’s smile was bigger than I’d ever seen it as he leaned back against the sofa. “You know. This makes it all worth it. Getting chased out of LA, being chased by Torq and his group of dimwitted knuckleheads for months, and even having him here in New York. It’s all worth it to have this.”

I tucked my other leg under myself so that I was sitting cross-legged in front of him. I held my ankles and rocked forward as a giggle came out of me that I couldn’t suppress.

Rick watched me curiously. “What’s gotten into you?”

I shook my head as the giggling continued. “I just feel really good.”

“That’s probably the wine,” he mused.

“No. Well, maybe a little bit.”

He chuckled. “Should we back off the drinks?”

“No,” I said, reaching for my glass and rolling to my feet. I walked around the carpet on my living-room floor as I took a sip. “I just feel really good. You know? The sort of good that you know can’t last too long because life likes to kick you in the balls when things are going just
