Opening her eyes, Bailey blinked in the dim light, staring at the cracked cement ceiling. Why did it seem so familiar? A clawed hand drags sharply across my skin. Blood beads, dripping down. Parker chafed at the delay in following the signal left by Bailey as Jaxon, the traitor, took her farther and farther from the pack. Not usually a rash man, he was ready to jump in his truck and go, but even among bloodthirsty werewolves, some preparation needed to happen. First off, the women and children left behind required protection, so some males were selected to stay and the females armed with guns. Sexist, but then again, a smaller female wolf didn't stand much of a chance against a larger aggressive male. Bullets, however, evened the odds. Waking up surrounded by male bodies proved interesting, especially when she needed to ease out to pee and brush her teeth. One of the guys had thought ahead and hit the motel's store because she found not only toothpaste and a brush but also some deodorant and lotion for her skin. The one thing she didn't bother with was clothes. During her uneasy slumber, where she'd found herself sometimes crying, she'd taken time to reflect as the male bodies around her shifted positions but made sure to stay in close contact at all time. She reflected on the fact that she had three men who cared so much for her that they faced down the ultimate in evil to save her. She mused on the growing wonder in her belly. Hugging her superbly large stomach, Bailey waddled to the front porch her mates had built her and surveyed them as they worked on their newest present to her-a gazebo. She still hadn't quite figured out what one did with that structure, but she didn't tell them that, not when they seemed so darned determined to give her one. Next on their agenda, they'd informed her, was a play structure for the baby. Never mind the child wouldn't be big enough to play on it for at least a year or more. Apparently their child would need one. And the list went on. Truly, though, she couldn't complain. How many women had three men determined to make her life as wonderful as possible? Sometimes she couldn't believe her luck, but as Dana, her best female friend, said, "Three is so much better than one. Especially all at once." Absently, she ran her tongue over the inside of her bottom lip, the small, ridged scar from the small bite Jaxon had given her-their mating exchange-tingling again.

Months later . . . The craving for chocolate hit her hard. Ooey, gooey, melt-in-her-mouth goodness. Rubbing her rounded belly, Thea rose from the couch and headed to the kitchen, but just like poor Old Mother Hubbard's, her cupboards were bare. The silly children's rhyme made her smile as she perused the shelves. Saltine crackers, cans of soup, some stale cereal. No chocolate. God, what an idiot. He was almost as stupid as his missing younger brother. Walked right into the trap and pretty much handed himself to the assholes lying in wait. Thea didn't know how long she'd existed in this prison. All she knew was Hell couldn't be any worse than this. She often lamented the stupid need for a chocolate bar that had driven her from the safety of her apartment to the corner store down the street. She played the what-if game in her head.
