Chapter 33

Max's mouth drops, and the bite of bread he just took falls to the floor.

"Charming," Becca sneers, a smile pulling at the corner of her mouth. Her right hip popped out, and hand placed on it delicately.

I shrug, proud of myself.

Her eyes take me in, reminding me I'm wearing pajamas. Thankfully, she doesn't say anything.

"Let's eat!" Max slaps his hands together, attempting to break the tension.

If I really were seeing Max, I would have done two things by now.

Run, or set Mommy Dearest straight from day one.

Sitting at the table I help myself to some of Max's spaghetti. It's smells amazing.

"So how long is Dad out of town for?" Max asks his mother.

She waves her hand around. "I don't know. Tomorrow I think."

Slurping a noodle into my mouth his mother arches a brow in my direction. Sauce slaps against my cheek as I take in the last inch. "Do you have any garlic, babe?" I question. Wanting to add some to my spaghetti.
