His question caught me off guard, leaving me unsure of how I could possibly prove my innocence. I needed to find a way out of this situation, as that was the only chance to clear my name.

Even if I wasn't entirely blameless and had come here with a spiked drink, I couldn't bear all the responsibility. I had to clear my name.
