Logan

Past

"So you want me to make friends with the unpopular guy, who you worry is depressed?" I ask while balancing a pen over the top of my fingers.

The principal, Paul, is glaring daggers at me, unimpressed by my talented fingers. But he needs me, so he won't tell me to stop playing with his pen. Some kid named Ethan Archer doesn't have a single friend, and a teacher saw cut marks on his wrists. So now the principal wants me to make best buddies with him.

"Look," Paul is sweating. I can see beads forming on his bald forehead as he tries to find words. "You have poor grades, so you can benefit from making friends with the kid. Ethan's grades are excellent, and even if you're older, he should have no trouble with your subjects."

Sweet. I can already see the future flashing past my eyes—top grades in everything, Logan the math genius. I can't wait! Now all I need to do is make sure Ethan can gain from this too. I will be his best friend ever
