Chapter 66

Memory of the Past 

As summer gave way to autumn, patrol duties became even more dreaded for me. Both inside and outside of the safehouse, the air became more chilly. The insulation in this room was a complete farce.

I let out a long, exasperated groan as I burrowed further into the heavy blanket that had been put over my shoulders. Anya, who was seated against the wall to my left and reading a book, had a grimace on her face. It was one of mine, and it was one of the few items Mom had managed to take with her when she left with Thomas during the Takeover of the apartment building. It was my copy of Twilight, which was one of my favorite books back when I believed that supernatural entities were nothing more than a fictional narrative to be entertained.

"Can you tell me what this is?" Anya replied as she poked her index finger inside the book. "How is it that she is completely unaware that he is a vampire?"
