CHAPTER 75

KRISTINA'S POV

Nathan, noticing my expression, reached for my hand and squeezed it gently. "Kristina, are you okay?" he asked quietly. He was looking intently at me.

I managed an affirmative grunt as a response and he released my hand. We began walking again. After what seemed like forever, the top of the ridge came into view. On the other side of it was the village nestled against its own mountain wall. The walls were a soft brown with the beginnings of ivy, giving it an ethereal look. As if it didn't belong here.

The first person we met on our way up was Mrs. Smith. She greeted us cheerfully. "Welcome back," she said with a smile. "How was your journey?" Her gaze swept the forest around us and her smile faded. "Was everything alright?"

"Everything is fine," Nathan reassured her quickly. I nodded too.

She let her gaze rest on me for a few more seconds before moving on without asking any further questions. She knew it wouldn't help to ask. She'd never understood my aversion to the
