Chapter 22 - By your side.

Nathaniel had barely opened his eyes since yesterday and merely muttered words we couldn’t understand every time we tried to coax him into drinking some water. His eyes would flutter as he lugged it down, but we could sense he wasn’t aware of who we were and where he was. Me and Maude had barely slept, taking turns to watch over him, with Mallon and Matthias stopping by with more fresh water and linen. I nearly cried every time Nathaniel soiled and wetted himself and he’d have bouts of shouting and screaming in his sleep. Our poor Nathaniel was locked away for months in complete darkness and who knows how little food and fresh water he was given!

My emotions flittered from guilt to sorrow and anger, all I wanted was to be able to go back in time and save him from all of this. We may have sworn to be there for one another but I never would have agreed to it, if I had known this was how far his loyalty to me would be pushed.

I sat quietly at his bedside, most of the dirt and grubbiness
