Gerald arrived home, feeling more tense than necessary. He'd expected to feel lighter now that he had cut ties with Scarlett but couldn't help the bad feeling I his gut. Like something terrible was going to happen afterwards. He'd tried to shake it off on his way home but it only got stronger.
Of course, Serena was waiting for him when he arrived. A smile on her face, she welcomed him with a kiss, wrapping her hands around him afterwards. He took in a deep breath, some of his worries dropping away.
" I didn't expect you to be out so late." She whispered against his neck." Sorry, I didn't know I would take so long." He muttered, his voice gruff. She pulled away, the smile still on her face. She had already dressed for the night and from where he stood, he could see all her beautiful features but now wasn't the time for carnal desires.

Serena woke up with a sick feeling in her gut. Rubbing her aching muscles, she stifled a yawn. She barely got any sleep last night as she kept thinking of how to tell Gerald everything. Shaking her head as if to dislodge the thoughts, she slipped out of a bed. A knock came on her door, interrupting her. It creaked open and Lana peeked in. She relaxed. " Good morning, my lady." She greeted as she walked in. Serena murmured a reply. " Where's Gerald?" She asked as she ran her through her hair. " He's downstairs ma'am. It's almost time for breakfast." She informed Serena. Serena sighed, glancing at the large clock in the room. " I must've woken up late." She muttered to herself. " I need to hurry." She told the younger lady, who nodded in approval. " I'll help you run your bath." Lana said as she walked to the bathroom.
Days passed and Serena managed just fine. It wasn't easy, seeing her abuser everyday and having to act like she was unaffected but she did it. She made sure she was never alone and spent a lot of time with Gerald who seemed not to mind. She was eagerly waiting for the time Thomas would pack his things and leave because the week he had proposed was slowly coming to an end. She'd told herself she would survive as long as Gerald was by her side and that looked like the case. It looked like everything will turn out fine and Thomas would leave without making any contact with Serena. Until that day came. Gerald had received a letter from the Royal family asking for a meeting and all dukes had to be in attendance. Gerald was no exception. It would last for a week before they could be able to return home. Serena heart dropped to the ground when she heard it, her body breaking into goosebumps. " You really have to go?" Sh
Serena spent the next days in fear, hiding from Thomas. She barely came out of her room and when she did, she was always with a maid or someone she could trust. She was eagerly waiting for the week to be over so Gerald could return from his trip. When the third day arrived, she didn't come out at all. She had expected Lana to bring her food just like she had been doing for the past few days so when noon arrived and Lana was nowhere to be found, she was immediately worried. Thinking Thomas might have done something to them, she immediately stepped out of the room. With her heart in her throat, she stepped out of the room, surveying the hallway. It was empty. Serena let out a breath she didn't know she was holding and continued down, calling Lana's name. There was no response from her or anyone for that matter. That made her even more worried than before. Her steps soundless, she continued downstairs, glancing around. " Lana?" She called again. Still no a
Serena escaped to her room, locking the door behind her. Slumping to the ground, she let the tear well up in her eyes and flow out. She was so terrified for a moment she'd thought he would have his way there. She lay there, her heartbreaking. Why does this have to happen to her now! How the hell is she supposed to stay away from him till Gerald comes back! With shaking legs, she stood up to her feet, barricading the door with a few things before standing behind it, her heart beating loudly in her chest " You can't hide in there forever, you know that right?" Thomas's voice boomed and her blood ran cold. He was already here! She clenched her fists so hard they began to hurt. " Go away…" she growled, her voice menacing. She heard him chuckle, probably amused by it. " I'll find the key to this room and when I do, you're going to regret biting me, young lady." He announced. Her heart did a summersault and she felt li
Chapter 23 " You son of a bitch!" Gerald growled as he pushed Thomas off Serena, punching him in the face. " You bastard!" He growled, watching as blood transfusions trickled down his nose. Serena scurried away from the spot, gripping her clothes tightly as tears of relief poured out of her eyes. He's finally here! Thomas, that bastard almost had his way with her. Still blinded by anger, Gerald continued to rain blows on Thomas and the latter did nothing to fight back. When he finally released him due to exhaustion, Thomas coughed out blood, his face a mess. He chuckled, much to everyone's surprise. Gerald felt the barely depleted anger rush up again. He tried to rush up at him but Thomas caught him just in time, pushing him away. Gerald landed on his bottom. Thomas cleaned his face. " Wasn't expecting you till the day after tomorrow." He drawled, the disgusting smirk still on his face. " Were you that worried about her you left your d
Gerald stared ahead, his face drawn into hard lines as he watched the doctor inspect Serena who was still unconscious. He'd been terrified to death after she went limp in his arms and he thought for a moment that he'd lost her. He would never be able to forgive himself if he did. The doctor finally straightened up, walking towards him with an expressionless look on his face. " How is she, doctor?" Gerald asked as he stood up, worry radiating off him in waves. The doctor let out a sigh before continuing with his diagnosis. " She's fine. Just exhausted and under a lot of stress. Not to mention she's been malnourished for a while and that has taken a toll on her body. I've administered some medications and she's resting right now. It'll take a while before she wakes up so I'll suggest you be patient." The doctor told him solemnly. Gerald glanced at Serena whose eyes kept twitching as she slept. Even in her sleep, she was still so restless. A huge lump grew in Gerald's
Hours later Sarah had left, Gerald went in to see Serena. Pushing the door open, he found her sitting up in bed, her gaze unfocused. From where he stood, he could see how red and puffy her eyes were, with the dark circles underneath. Her shoulders drooped, she looked lost. Slowly turning to look at him, their gazes held for a second before she looked away. Something settled on Gerald's chest, making it hard for him to breathe. " How are you doing?" He asked, his voice low and gentle. She nodded but didn't say anything else. The cold air swirled around them, causing Gerald to shiver. The silence was too unsettling. Serena shifted uncomfortably on the bed, fiddling with her fingers. " I'm sorry..." Gerald finally blurted out, startling Serena. She looked up at him, her face blank. He took in a deep breath, the words caught in his throat. " I'm sorry for what happened." He added. She stared at him for the longest time, before turning her gaze t
How could Thomas be dead? Gerald repeated to himself a thousand times. He was fine yesterday. What could have happened in the space of hours to have warranted his death? It just wasn't making any sense. The butler continued with his story. " That was the report I received from the police station. They went into his cell yesterday and found him on the ground, unconscious and cold." He finished. " That's impossible…" Thomas grated out, his voice low and deadly. " Thomas isn't dead. He was fine yesterday. Maybe they were lying to you." John was surprised at the turn of events. Gerald was finding it hard to believe his brothers death? He tried again. " B-but, Your Grace…" " But nothing." Gerald cut him off with a raise of his hand. " Go back to the police station and tell them to provide Thomas, alive and well. Do you hear me? He's not dead. He can't be." " Who's dead?" A tiny, scratchy voice asked. Th
