Lance POV
As soon as the werewolves leave and I’m sure the coast is clear, I spin around and scoop up the injured wolf in my arms and then race to my car as fast as I can while cradling the injured wolf to not injure it more. Along the way, I tell my friends through the mind-link that I have to go without providing them any details. I then block the link and speed back home and to the hospital.
This is the first time in years that I’m going back home on my own, and I’m not being forced to go back by my father for something ‘important’. After I turned 18, I left and seldom came back.
As I dart in and out of traffic, I let the doctor know I’m coming. When I round the corner and the hospital comes into view, the doctors and nurses are already waiting outside.
I come to a screeching halt right in front of the staff. But before I can open my door, the staff rushes to the passenger’s side and gently pulls the injured wolf out.
I bolt out of the vehicle. A surge of anxiety rushes through me. “She is barely alive. I don’t know what happened, but some werewolves were definitely searching for her. Don’t let anyone know she is here.”
My possessiveness kicks in, but I don’t know why. I usually don’t care if werewolves kill each other, much less, wanting to save one.
As I round the front of the car, I grunt, “Be careful. She is losing blood everywhere. I’m surprised she is still alive. I should have gone to a closer hospital, but I don’t trust any other one besides ours.”
They carefully place her on the stretcher.
One of the doctors turns towards me. “We will do our best to save her, Prince. Don’t worry.”
I nod, knowing they are the best. If anyone can save her, they can.
As he goes to turn away from me, I quickly grab his arm. “Oh. She has a weird smell too. I can’t place it. If they were hunting her down, they may have done something to her before or during the fight.”
He nods. “We plan on doing a full work up on her, Prince. Leave it to us now. Okay. Please, go sit in the waiting room, and we will let you know how she is when we figure things out.”
He stands in front of me while the others push the stretcher and the injured wolf into the hospital.
My heart aches looking at the wolf as the white sheet under her slowly turns red and the smell of blood hangs in the air.
I bob my head up and down, wishing I had healing powers and could fix her myself.
Slowly, in a slight daze, I make my way into the hospital and sit down in the waiting room, but I don’t sit long before I’m up and pacing back and forth.
I glance over at the door that the medical staff took the wolf through. My stomach twists.
How badly is she hurt? I should have taken some time to do a more thorough examine, but she didn’t have the time. If I had waited too long to get her here, she would have died.
My body tenses at the thought.
Why did those werewolves want her? What did she do to them?
I pivot and head back in the other direction while my mind fills with various reasons. Each of them is worse than the previous one.
I glance down at my watch. Only five minutes have passed.
Can’t time move faster? Why is it going so slow?
After what seems like forever, the same doctor as before walks out. “Prince, you can see her now. She is stable, but she isn’t out of the woods yet. She is still in critical condition.”
I swallow the lump in my throat and follow him into the exam room. The mysterious wolf is still in her wolf form, and they have cleaned up all the blood from her fur.
She almost looks dazzling as her blonde hair shimmers under the lights. I’ve never seen a blonde wolf before. Are they as rare as white ones?
A faint smell of blood hangs in the air, but it is masked with the various disinfectants and other chemicals the hospital uses. My nose twitches, but I ignore it.
I walk over to the bed and ask, “So, what is wrong with her? And how could she stay alive for so long in that condition?”
The doctor steps over to the other side of the bed. “She has alpha blood. Pretty strong alpha blood, too. It is what saved her from all the injuries and the poison.”
My head jolts up. “What? Poison?”
He nods and looks down at the injured wolf. “Yes. It is one that isn’t used too often, but when you said she had an odd smell, we ran tests for all poisons. Many give off faint odors. If she didn’t have the strong alpha blood, the dose would have been fatal. I’m sure it impacted her ability to fight. Given how strong her alpha blood is, she would have normally defeated all those attackers with ease, but the poison hindered her.”
He pauses and looks up at me. “Someone was trying to kill her, but why?”
A rage ignites within me. I want to know that too.
He sighs. “We are going to have to wait until she changes back to her human form and regains consciousness to figure out who she is. We don’t have thorough enough records for us to use her wolf form to positively identify her. I’m hoping she can help us when she wakes up. Before you ask, we don’t know when she will wake up. Between the injuries which are healing slowly because of the poison and the poison itself, she could be out for quite some time. In the meantime, we will do whatever we can to heal her as fast as we can, but it will take time.”
His words weigh down on me, especially the part about not knowing when she will wake up.
He looks back down at the wolf. “We have documented everything, including all her injuries. This appears to be an attempt on her life. I can only speculate why, but we are doing this by the book in case your father and the council decide to hold someone accountable for what has happened. I can only assume she is someone very important, since she has alpha blood. She will be safe here. Her file has been flagged and security has been alerted. No one but you and your father are to come near her.”
I pat the top of the wolf’s head. “Thanks. I want her moved to a private room as soon as you can. She can use my family’s room. We have no need for it right now.”
The doctor nods. “We will get her moved up there right away. Also, your father wants to talk to you. I had to notify him of the situation right away. He said to send you over there as soon as I fill you in on her condition.”
My stomach instantly sinks. What does he want?
I stare down at the dazzling wolf. Every part of me wants to stay by her side for some strange reason, but I can’t ignore my father’s command, and that is exactly what it is. A command.
I slowly exhale. “Okay. I’ll go in a few minutes. Is there anything else you discovered when you were examining her? Anything I should be made aware of?”
The doctor pauses and stares at me.
A tension builds in the room and sets me on edge.
After a few moments, the doctor presses his lips together and shakes his head. “We are still running more tests. I’m sure there will be more to tell you after all the test results come back, but I would hate to make an assumption and it be wrong. Shouldn’t you go see what your father, the king, wants?”
Trinity POVWhere am I? Did I die? I look around, but I see nothing except darkness. There is no grass, dirt, or floor under me, but I don’t feel like I’m floating. I tilt my head and stomp my foot. My confusion continues when my foot hits something hard, but I can’t see whatever it is. I take a deep breath as questions swirls through my head. Wait. There is absolutely no scent or smell at all in the air either or a breeze. What is going on?Reluctantly, I take a small step forward, testing to make sure I won’t suddenly fall through the darkness. I breathe a small sigh of relief when again, my foot settles on something hard. But what is it? A flicker of light pulls my attention up and to the image in front of me. It is me in my wedding dress. The long flowing white satin fabric glistens under the lights at the church, while the soft fabric hugs my body and shows off my curves. I remember this. It has happened only a few hours earlier. That is if this is right after
Lance POV I stand in front of my father’s office door, but no matter how I try, I can’t bring myself to knock. Dread creeps over me, and I’m frozen on the spot. What does he want? I don’t fear anything but my father. He is the only person who has the power to defeat me, but his disappointing looks are what hurts me the most. I know he has wanted me to take over for him, but he has agreed to allow me to spend some time exploring the world on my own before I take the crown. A part of me hopes he will skip me and put my younger brother on the throne instead, but I wouldn’t be so lucky. An image of the injured blonde wolf flashes through my mind. I take a deep breath and raise my hand. Knock. Knock. My father’s curt voice bellows, “Come in. You have been waiting out there long enough.” Gulp. I can do this. Before I lose my courage, I walk into his office. “You called for me.” My father looks up from his desk and the various piles of papers scattered across it. H
Trinity POV A slight ache pulses down the middle of my head, but it isn’t anywhere close to the agonizing pain I was feeling earlier. I keep my eyes shut, hoping it will go away. To my frustrations, the slight ache continues. Tentatively, I open my eyes. I’m still in the same place as before. Where exactly is it? Why am I here? Am I stuck in some kind of limbo? Do I need to do something before I can go somewhere else? Questions continue to roll through my mind. My breath hitches. Where is my wolf? She hasn’t said anything or moved around. Where is she? I couldn’t have been injured so badly that my wolf retreated into the shadows. An alpha should always hear their wolf, no matter how injured you are. Fear washes over me. No. I can’t lose my wolf. That would be the end of me. A bright light flashes in front of me. I quickly squint and hold my hand out in front of my face, shielding myself. The light dims and another image, like before, appears in front of
Lance POV My heart races as the doctor pauses for a moment. “Maybe we should go into her room.” I nod and turn towards the end of the hall. My feet move a little faster than normal, but I fight against it and keep a steady pace alongside the doctor. Once inside the room, the doctor shuts the door. As soon as he turns towards me, I practically pounce on him. “What is it, doc? Did something bad happen, or is she not going to recover?” He shakes his head. “It isn’t anything like that. I think we’ve gotten her identity figured out. There were several posts online about a wedding happening over in New Moon pack with their first ever female alpha heir to a guy from Dark Moon pack. I can do some more digging, but since there are very few female alphas with this strong of alpha blood, I can assume this injured wolf is her.” I glance across the room at the hospital bed and the unconscious blonde wolf. “I would agree with you. Did you hear about anything or what happened?” “Sor
Lance POV Like I’ve been doing for the last few days, I march into the hospital and towards the private room. People scurry out of my way as my heavy footsteps echo through the halls. Just like every other time, the closer I get to Trinity’s room my frustrations and anger slowly melt away. I still can’t explain what is happening to me, but I know for sure I’m not liking it. My cold exterior is what I use to put fear into others. If I don’t have that, how can I rule as the king. A king should be feared by all. My father is. As I approach the nurse’s station, a young nurse dashes towards me. “Prince! Something has happened!” I immediately stop and whip my focus around towards her and bark, “What?” Fear flashes across her face, and she stumbles to a stop. Quickly, she lowers her head and soft mumbles, “She has shifted.” I shake my head. “What? Who has shifted?” My lip twitches up in irritation. Her hand trembles as she raises it up and points down the hall. “Trin…”
Lance POV This can’t be possible. I blink, but it doesn’t change. I run my bloody finger along the deep gouge on Trinity’s cheek and my chest tightens. My father steps closer to the bed and grunts, “What is it? Did something go wrong?” My eyes widen and drift over to him. The words to explain it run through my head, but when I open my mouth nothing comes out. They are stuck on the lump in my throat. I move my mouth, but still nothing comes out. Confusion flashes across my father’s face. His patience runs thin as he barks, “Tell me what is going on.” His command has me instinctively responding as I mumble, “It is gone.” His face scrunches up as he stares at me. “What is gone? I don’t understand.” He turns his attention back to Trinity and slaps my hand away from her, before sliding his thumb over the area where the deep cut had been. He instantly realizes what I’m referring to and snaps his eyes back up to me and gasps, “The cut. It is gone.” In a daze, I nod.
Trinity POV Warmth fills my throat and slowly radiates out. A man grunts, “How long do you think it will take?” Where is that voice coming from? Another man replies, “I don’t know. We will have to wait and see.” Wait and see what? As the warmth creeps across my body, all my aches slowly disappear. My eyes slowly flutter and open. The bright light instantly blinds me, and I quickly close them again. I breathe a small sigh of relief because I’m out of the crazy limbo place. Shuffling sounds around me pull my attention back to reality. I’m finally awake. I open my eyes again and find a godlike man with short brown hair and warm caramel brown eyes standing on one side of the bed. The gold flecks in his eyes sparkle and lure me to him. The warmth from earlier continues to spread through me, making the tips of my fingers and toes tingle. A gruff voice pulls me to the other side of the bed. “How do you feel?” The authority those few words hold puts me on edge and ma
Trinity POVLance’s words echo in my head. He gave me his blood. My stomach lurches forward. What does he mean by that? The King waves his hand towards Lance and then me. “I had him feed you his blood. When he smeared his blood on your face, your cuts instantly healed up. The same seems to be true for you to him too. I forced him to do a test and cut his hand. I then pricked your finger. Your blood instantly healed his cut. I don’t quite understand why. He can heal people but not instantly like this and never was there someone can heal him like this. It is very strange. But we are also keeping this little bit of information to just the three of us. Okay?”His last word rings out with an air of authority and is more of a demand than a question. I swallow hard and nod. “Okay.”I glance to my side at Lance. Is he a healer? I’ve heard about them, but I have never met any before. My moment of confusion then snaps back to the part where Lance fed me his blood. A wave o
