Deception

Lady Isabella entered her room, the mask of false concern still fixed upon her face. She hadn't been back long when a soft knock on her door drew her attention. Her son, Liam, stood there, his eyes curious as they landed on her slightly swollen face.

"Mother, what happened to your face?" Liam's voice was tinged with concern, his brows furrowing as he studied her.

Lady Isabella offered a dismissive wave of her hand, feigning nonchalance. "I put on a show for Adolph," she admitted, her voice carrying a note of triumph. "I wanted to appear innocent and concerned."

Liam's lips curled into a smirk, a glint of approval in his eyes. "Clever," he commented, his voice low. "But what if he discovers the truth?"

Lady Isabella's gaze met her son's, her expression confident. "He won't," she said firmly. "I've covered my tracks well."

As they spoke, their conversation was interrupted by a knock on the door. Both of them turned their attention toward the entrance, surprise flickering in their eyes.
