According to Max, Cindy called him that night, which happened to be our anniversary.

I remember it clearly. Max always went the extra mile for special occasions like our anniversary, birthdays, and Valentine's Day. Even when finances were tight, he never skipped the rituals. He would either buy me flowers, small gifts, or prepare a candlelight dinner. Sometimes, he would even make handmade items like pottery mugs or knitted stuffed animals.

Those knitted toys, especially, were such a thoughtful gesture. Not many men would go to such lengths!

Max's skills were impressive, right? Most guys wouldn't put in that much effort!

On that particular night, Max had bought ribeye steaks to cook a romantic candlelight dinner at home. He had just finished preparing the steaks when his phone rang. I was in the living room, eating fruit and watching TV. I overheard him politely answering, "Hello, this is Max."

I couldn't make out the rest of the conversation clearly, but I heard a lot of "uh-huh"
