The Harsh Truth

I could not believe what I was looking at. In fact, I did not want to believe it, I did not want it to be true.

I could feel the tears building in my eyes again as I stared. “What is that?” My voice was soft and shaky.

The guard still had his pistol in his hand but it was no longer pointed towards me. He walked in my direction, a small smile playing on his lips. “I think you and I know very well that you know what that is.”

I swallowed, a knot forming in my throat as my heart pounded. “That’s my brother’s necklace…” I furrowed my eyebrows. It was around the dead body’s neck.

I remember that I had bought him that necklace for his eighteenth birthday, and he has worn it since. He never took it off, and I even used to tease him about it.

“That…it is.” The guard shrugged, smirking.
