Ryan insisted that their own safe house was only a few minutes away, but a half hour later, we were still following the black Corolla. The darkness had surrounded us, mist covering the world completely. The outlined objects off to the side of the road were nothing more than hidden shadows.
Despite Nathan's protest, we still had to go to the Blackmoor pack house. Gabriel was only here to get us and none of their shelters were within a couple hours' drive. Which meant we were back to our original plan.
I'm glad I wasn't the one driving. The only sign that Gabriel was in front of us was the occasional break lights, even with the headlights on. But Nathan probably saw the vehicle with no problem. And although he looked exhausted, he showed no sign of it while
There was only one bed in the room and Nathan insisted we share it. I said it was fine if I slept on the ground, but Nathan said that we had a long day ahead of us and we both deserved to have a good night rest. Grumpily, I agreed. I was too exhausted to hold a good argument. I barely showered and got my pajamas on before crashing onto the bed. It was a little bouncy, but I still fell asleep in seconds. I hardly noticed the mattress dipping down on the other side as Nathan slumped in after me. The scene that lay before me was nothing short of terrifying. The room looked to be a makeshift jail. Junto and Nathan were up against the wall, thei
“What?” I blinked. That was not at all what I was expecting him to say. “The night of the gathering. I called your phone because your fear was so strong I could feel it from where I was. But then your brother answered your phone and said you left it behind. I was going to go back when he said he just talked to Hyene and she said you were just fine.” I tilted my head, not understanding him completely. “But Junto was there for me when we pulled up. You were waiting for Claire.” Then I remembered what he said earlier. “You knew about our connection since the first day. Why did you go to the Gathering with
“Gabriel’s here,” Nathan said just as I was putting the last of my clothes in the bag. Nathan came back in and took his own bag, pulling it over his shoulder. We woke up at noon, a lot later than we thought we would be. It was a goo thing Gabriel was running late, because we weren’t actually ready to go until an hour after. I ran into the bathroom, having one last stop before our long trip on the road. For some reason, I felt really nervous about seeing the pack again. But I would be lying if I said I wasn’t excited to see them again. Especially Claire.
I saw Nathan barreling towards us right before Claire's finger twitched on the trigger. Nathan's hard body slammed into her at the same time she pulled the trigger. Everything seemed to go into slow-motion. Nathan tackled Claire to the ground, fighting her for possession over the weapon the whole time. The bullet came closer to me and I flew all my weight to the right to avoid the bullet. But before I could really move, the small piece of metal launched into my skin, puncturing my right bicep. Everything was speeding up now. My body crashed to the forest floor cushioned by a pile of needles. Stinging instantly covered my arm and I hissed as I t
I stood straight up from my position against the railing. “Wait, you said Derek and Liam disappeared at the same time?” Junto’s eyebrows scrunched together and slowly stood as well. “Well, by the time we had come back, they were both gone. Why?” I walked off the bridge, abandoning the lake beauty and running straight for the forest. “We have to get back! Is Gabriel still here?” Junto shrugged. “I don’t really know, I just came out to check on you while Nathan went to look
A rickety old hotel stood, barely hanging on to any sight of life. I was begging myself that Gabriel wouldn't pull his vehicle into the establishment, and I let out a disappointed sigh when he did. Nathan seemed to have the same feeling. I thought we were on the highway towards a nice place where they put the survivors. Imagine my surprise when we pull up to this mess. The dark boards of the foundation made the house look like it was built in the 1700's. The windows were mostly boarded and the few that weren't I wished were. The boards hanging onto the roof were scattered and sticking up in random places as if someone tacked them on at a later date. Although the house was surrounded with green grass, that did little to help the place look taken care of.
Dinner was a bad idea. Not only was it painfully awkward, but we hadn’t known anybody there.Gabriel sat at the opposite side of the room and at a different table, and regardless of my constant checking, there was no way to point out the little boy I spent months with. He just simply wasn’t here. But if he wasn’t here, where was he?Nathan laid a gentle hand on my elbow. “It’s a full moon.”I hadn’t even noticed. I’ve been so preoccupied lately with everything else that was going on, I didn’t even notice it was the full moon.“We’re going on a run. You can ride my back like you did before, that way you can keep up.”I smiled wide. “Was that a challenge?”Nathan liked my response and smiled back.“I appreciate the offer, but I really need to do some planning. I have to figure out our next move now that Liam or Derek aren’t here.&rdquo
I stepped gingerly into a dark hallway and looked to my left. Claire was tip-toeing next to me. I couldn't quite understand what was going on, but I knew the boys were in trouble. Don't ask me how, but I just knew. A large duffel bag weighed down my right side, heavy contents making it nearly impossible to keep upright. I looked over to Claire again and realized she had two bags, one draped over each shoulder. I tried to stay light on my feet as I made my way down the hall. When I got to a door, I could feel Nathan behind it. I swallowed my fear and leaned my face onto the crack of the open door. I was expecting another office or room of some sort, but instead, it was a lit stairwel
