25: What did he want?

I didn’t stop to catch my breath until I was in front of the elevator. Footsteps pounded behind me, and I hit the button on the wall harder than before. Hank couldn’t have followed me, could he? Security would have stopped him. But they let him into the company garage. 

The elevator door slid open. I stepped in, and someone followed. All the air rushed out when I raised my head. The door shut, caging me in with the boss. My breath hitched. I staggered, and my back hit the wall. 

Waylen didn’t speak. We stared at each other for long seconds until he turned to face the door without a word. Seriously? Did he see us? Even if he did, so what? I could talk to anybody I wanted. Man or woman. 

“What did he want?” he whispered. 

Waylen’s voice was so low, but the silence carried it to my ears. I didn’t speak. Waylen shoved his hands into his pocket. His shoulders tensed, and angry waves rolled off him.&
